  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Being the typical new mom who wants to try and do everything just right, I even read the directions that came with the pacifiers. It said that they should be replaced every 4 weeks. Does anyone actually do this? I wash them daily and boil them every few days so I was wondering if they are not damaged if they have to be replaced.

It's probably not a bad idea, we replaced my daughters binki's bout ever month er six weeks er so. Mainly cause where that rubber attaches to the plastic starts wearin out an cracks a bit. Once that's happened it's liable to tear off completely after some time an could cause some chokin an what not.

I cain't say as we ever boiled em any, infact I'd be a bit worried they'd come apart faster like that, but I understand why you'd wanna do it. We normally jes washed em off er if they fell on the ground er sumthin one of us would lick the thin off. (We sorta by passed some of the 'new' parent thins an jes went straight to the old parent stuff hehe)

Yeah, I feel sure we will hit that point pretty soon! I am pretty laid back about stuff. In fact, my biggest worry is that I am not worrying enough about stuff. That is why I wondered about this. I'm inclined to think unless it is cracking or tearing why worry but then I think...maybe I should worry.

Welp, one other thin my wife used to worry bout to, is that the rubber will sorta start to deteriorate (sp) a bit to, but my daughters got one em choppemin at the bit probs, er used to an she'd jes chew the thins to peices hehe

Havin my first child was a major deal in my life, but I was number 2 outta 7 so I got to see a bunch to do with kids an even had to help out wit em an the like, an we always had a bunch of animals so alot of that was sorta jes natural to me... but when my wife was prego.... jimmney crickets.... I had to buy a fetal heart montior... buy a bunch of books for er AND I even had to buy a crib..... which was used as a clean landry basket til my daughter was two... cause I couldn't git er out my bed lol

I guess there comes a time when one can be over prepared but I think far to often women folk especially worry themsef's into the ground when they kinda need to relax a bit an sorta go with the flow as it were. Geezzs I remember that thump thump thump of hearin that montior goin for an hour ever night before bed... an sure ok I liked hearin it to..... BUT the one time she couldn't git the thin to work jes so so... my goodness... it jes gave us sumthin else to worry bout hehe

We use to be quite diligent about sterilizing things, probably more so than most because our son was a primee(sp?).

But I think as with many parents, we get to the point that unless it's fallen onto an obvious pile of dirt, we apply the five-second rule and quickly blow it off. ;)

OK Fess up...have any of you guys ever tried out the pacifier to see what the appeal is? I have, I admit it. I would rather just chew gum. lol

Yeah I have.... beats me what the appeal is, an when my wife accidently threw my daughters away she never looked back. With Kat it was more of the thin to do then anythin else, if we gave it to er she used it, if we didn't she didn't. But I do know it keeps the traps shut for a while at least on some babes hehe

We have about 10. We throw them away when they crack. We keep them longer than 4 mos., but maybe since we've got so many they get about 4 mos. worth of use. We've tried taking them away from our son, but I swear he's got a secret stash somewhere. At least now we're down to just using them for nap time and when he goes to bed.

We call them dummies - and we keep track of them for ages. I am not a happy person when I lose things, so we hang onto them. I must say toward the end we purposefully let them go downhill, so that when they broke he wouldn't get another. We did sterilise them at the beginning, but once he was 6 months we stopped.

As for cleaning them with your mouth, I have heard a number of times this isn't such a good idea, cause it just gives them all the germs that are in your mouth, which is probably worse than what's on teh ground. We had a dentist tell a group of us that the other day, and also a number of early childhood nurses. So we used to just wash them off - or pick off any little bits of fluff when he was a bit older.

Same here..........

i use to be very anal about sterlizing.. now... if i find the time... then i will ......

As for the binkie....... we still have the one from the hospital.....(plus since you can now get them over the counter we have bought two more.. so we have them in very strategic places....)you have to be careful.. the one most hospitals gives has never hada recall... most other pacifers... have had recalls.... check out... www.cpsc.gov

We always used the silicone nookies (the clear ones) instead of the latex ones (the yellowish brown ones). They lasted much longer and didn't crack as easily...so, yeah, we definitely kept them for longer than 4 weeks.

My youngest would never take a nookie...believe me I TRIED to get her to take it (would have saved me many a sleepless night if she had).

My oldest couldn't sleep without her until she was about a year and a half. Then, she suddenly didn't want it anymore...she'd throw it down after just a minute or two of sucking on it. Turns out she'd bitten a tiny little hole in so that every time she sucked it would collapse. We just never replaced it after that...she was fine with it. She fussed a little more at bedtime for a week or two, but nothing major.

So my advice for parents trying to break the nookie habit...put a little hole in it or let them keep the one they've bitten a hole in...just make sure it's not a choking hazzard, though. It loses the appeal pretty quickly after that.

LOL, but he only gets another nookie if you buy him a new one though. ;) I guess we just stopped replacing them.

I'm sure there are all kinds of tricks...that one worked like a charm for us, though.

Well, having tried a number of times to get rid of it we eventually decided that there were more important things to work out - like toilet training.

However, after he turned 3 we told him that once it broke it was gone (he had 2, but as they were identical he didn't realise). So the first one broke on the way home from a big car trip - about 3 hours into a 10 hour drive, so we relented and gave him his brothers (he doesn't use them though). The we gave him the second one when we got home. When that broke there was one bad night, but a whole stack of bad day sleeps. Still not completely settled down. So realise getting rid of the dummy may mean sacrificing sleep.....

My baby's doctor about had a stroke at his 15 month checkup last week, when she walked in and saw him sucking on his bobo. But, I feel soooooooo mean taking it away from him.

His first sentence "where's it at"....a little bit slurred, but definitely a sentence, used anytime he can't find it.

*sigh* he has 3 left, and I refuse to buy anymore.

Any tips on not going insane during the weaning process?

my dd had hers until she was 2. then, as they got yucky, we threw them away and did not replace them any more. she knew they were yucky and in the trash. she had a hard time for a few weeks and asked for a paci at first and then stopped asking, but was grumpy and cried more than usual, but after about 3 weeks she forgot about it.
