Overwhelmed...

In an attempt to get away from school, i decided to look for a part time job to go along with my crappy family job... that was a few months ago and I barely have it in me to fill out an application. I have said I want to avoid fast food, and always thought gamestop would be a fun place to spend a few months working... filled out an application there and of course as my luck will have it I have not gotten a call from them.

Been looking around other places and people either aren't hiring, or don't have positions i am qualified for. So in this economy how does a physical weak moron get a job? Don't think that is going to happen for me. I absolutely Hate my job with my family.

All i have ever wanted was to be the best at something... but of course I'm not an athlete so that isnt going to happen. I would love to be at a big football college being forecasted as the #1 nfl draft pick in a few years, or at least have a good career there but no.

Anyone have any idea how to deal with these feelings? Anyone trying to say "oh your smarter then you think" kindly take your the world is perfect and everyone can accomplish anything lies to another thread.

Unfortunately, outside of fast food and retail, it's tough to get a really good job while you're still in school. I applied years ago at Gamestop and didn't hear back from them either, so you're not alone there. They're tough to get into.

You may have to settle for a big retailer like Wal-Mart. That was my first summer job back in high school and it was a good experience for me, despite what a lot of the haters will tell you. Over my college career I worked at Toys R Us for four years and I liked it there too; our store ALWAYS needed more people, so jobs are definitely out there but you may have to dig to find them.

Don't forget to call back after you turn in your application and keep up with it. Persistence is the key and employers are more likely to hire you if you show you're seriously interested and check in with them. Make them tell you "no".

I agree, check out places like WalMart, Circuit City, and other large chain retailers. Especially with Christmas coming up, they will need the extra help. Just avoid Worst Buy like the plague. They are horrible to employees and customers alike.

As for the NFL dream... what can I say other than you obviously don't want it enough. If you did, you would be working your butt off every day doing what it took to make it. No one is going to hand you anything in life, especially dreams like that. They take work and dedication. You sound very lazy and undedicated to anything by the post you made. You can't expect to become much of anything without working for it. If you want it bad enough, you will do what it takes to make it. Not sit back dreaming about how you wish you could, but you aren't this or that, so it's not going to happen. You're not athletic? Then get athletic. Talking about it isn't going to make it happen.

Its hard to continue being dedicated to anything when you fail at every turn. I don't expect to be handed things but when i work my rear end off and still constantly fail then there comes a point where the mind cant work anymore.

... What nonsense. You wanna go to the NFL? THEN JOIN A LOCAL FOOTBALL TEAM. Work out. Get in shape. See a doctor get those problems fixed. Wear leg braces. Play football and see how you like it for real.

Oh, and go to college. You can get an associates degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology pretty quick.

There's nothing else you're good at or interested in? I don't want to be mean, but banking your hopes on going pro in sports is a flimsy plan at best.

And as far as "you can achieve anything if you try", it's only true to a certain extent, but not exactly a lie. Some people are just born amazing (Mozart, etc.), but even Mozart worked at it and practiced. When people tell me I'm talented at the piano, I sometimes reply "No, I'm skilled. You can be just as good as me or better if you work at it and practice."


Good luck on getting into Gamestop...seriously, I would kind of like a part-time job there too. But almost literally every time I'm in there, some high school kids are asking for job applications and they always get turned down...I have literally never seen one instance of someone saying "yeah we're taking applications." This is in multiple locations, not just one.

See, I've heard only bad things about working at gamestop. One former employee even put up a 7 part youtube series on why not to shop there. It's like working at Guitar Center; it seems like a good idea at the time till you spend a week around the stupidity.

I don't know what I want to do and I am trying to get my A.A in General Studies finished at 22 just to finish something! At 18 I thought I wanted to go to college, I got there and a lot of things happened, now I'm not sure, I should of got an A.A.S in field so I could work. Look at your local college and see if there's anything that piques your interest, take some classes (I have electives in Criminal Justice, Marketing and Geology, lol), so don't be scared to think out of the box. I have too many interests, but there are things for you out there, and jobs too (looking for one of those too), as said, try seasonal jobs, UPS or FedEX should be hiring pretty soon(i used to work for them, good job, lot of work though), try an at home call center job(they do exist, but you have to go through your local hiring agency, don't do it via internet).

Two words, Community/2-year College. If you don't know what to do, then you'll find out there and still be making progress toward it at the same time. Also, if you don't have the money, you can apply for financial aid if you meet the requirements.

Well you won't get smart and qualified for anything until you start to learn and work. In my industry, you don't start out as a lead lighting designer. You have to work up to it, learning the things about the trade and meeting people. It's not something that happens overnight and you need years of training to get to be top dog. You need to get the same mentality that you're willing to start out at the bottom and work your way up. But you won't start until you decide to move yourself into doing something.

Failure is a state of mind. If at first you don't succeed, try again.... and again, and again, and again. Never take "no" for an answer. If you're not getting what you want, evaluate your situation and determine what changes can be made, ie. education/training. Figure out what it is you want to do and start taking the steps to get there. If you're unable to be in the NFL, figure out something else you'd like to do, perhaps involving that passion.

No job, skill, etc. worth having comes without sheding blood, sweat, and tears.

Don't bother with fast food, restaurants are better a much more respectable than fast food.


Sure, you'd still probably have to deal with ugly people (who doesn't?), but you get tips. Front of the house; bussers, hosts, servers, etc; get their tips by the end of the night. Back of the house; cooks, dishwashers, etc; get their tips worked into their paycheck via a percentage of the sales when worked.

Fast food is not even worth a thought. Restaurants are so much better. I started working at my pizza restaurant a year ago as a busser. Because the bosses felt I was good enough (mostly because I could carry the whole restaurant even on a busy Friday night) and because I needed more hours, I was made a dishwasher two months ago. Now I am being trained as a pizza cook that will make $9.50 an hour.

Retail is considered the most stressful job in the country. On top of that, you don't get tips and still have to deal with A LOT of ugly people.


Find a place. Fill out the application. Turn it in the next day with an updated resume. If you don't hear anything for a week, follow up. Say "hey, I turned in an application so-long-ago and would like to follow up on it". And after that, follow up every couple of days. If you don't have a job within a month, try somewhere else.

There's an old saying that goes "Out of sight, out of mind". Be in sight and be on their minds. That is how you get a job.



But of course all of that means nothing if you have no work ethic to speak of.

You could try selling Cutco. It's a professional job with a pretty awesome product and it pays well, too.

CrazyPerson, you're not alone. The weird economy is making it difficult for everyone who is unemployed to find work. I am a second year university student, and I have been searching for a job for two months. I have turned in over thirty applications and resumes, and have asked myself the same questions you're asking- "Am I really that unqualified for an entry level job?"

Well, the answer is no. It's just that you are competing with thousands of other applicants at any given time. You have to be persistent. Call them and call them and call them. Apply at more than one place at a time. Don't expect to get hired by the first company you apply to.

Don't get down on yourself. If you keep trying, your hard work will pay off. It just takes time. Believe me, I am in the same situation. (My problem is that I finally got two interviews yesterday, and it looks like that company that is going to hire me is the one that I would least like to work with. But I am in a state of desperation at this point and can't turn a job down.)
