  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Bible talks about gluttony being a sin and not being good to eat too much honey, but where does it talk about being overweight? How does that fit in? How do you define gluttony? Couldn't you be guilty of gluttony and not be overweight? Such as someone who binges and purges? I'm wondering where weight becomes a sin, i.e., do I need to go on a diet? ;)
there are a lot of people who are not overweight who are greedy. i have heard a minister say that an overweight person is in sin. i don't know about that, i think it is unwise and unhealthy, but there are a lot of thin people who are not right either. so i think that is discrimination.

Gluttony, I believe is referring to a food addiction that leads to excess.

Pro 23:2
(KJV) And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

(BBE) And put a knife to your throat, if you have a strong desire for food.

(CEV) Don't go and stuff yourself! That would be just the same as cutting your throat.

(GNB) If you have a big appetite, restrain yourself.

You can be skinny as a rail and be a glutton. Gluttony doesnt indicate being overweight, it refers to excess food intake [which can lead to being overweight].

To my knowledge, no binge diet is healthy, but there are good purge diets.

My wife knows alot about that stuff.

I can see the logic there, but then does that mean you can be a glutton for just certain things? Some people just can't leave some foods alone - say chocolate, or potato chips, etc. It's their alcohol if you will.

I suppose it could be used for other things such as a person who is a "glutton for punishment". Usually it is used in connection with an insationable desire for food of any kind. For example, eating the whole box of chocolates in one sitting because you "just couldnt stop" to me would be gluttony.

I learnt in church that God's way of eating is 2 meals a day. This is NOT a law. But if you are wondering how you can lose weight, after having tried everything, you might want to consider God's feeding pattern.

When He fed the children of Israel, it was 2 meals a day -- morning and evening. Elijah was fed by the crows twice a day. The priests ate twice a day the sacrifice.

Another principle is this: In the feeding of the 5,000, they ate till they had enough, till they were full/satisfied (not stuffed!).

So, putting it all together, eat 2 meals a day, but eat whatever you want till you are full (not stuffed), and you will still lose weight.

God has made our bodies such that we feel hunger and fullness. Honour these bodily responses. Allow your body to be hungry -- you don't have to be full all the time. There is a place for being hungry. You won't die if you skip one meal!

Again, this is not a law. You can always modify it to suit your needs. But a lot of people have tried this and succeeded. And they are happy, becos they can still eat what they want. There is still that freedom in Christ.

Disclaimer: I'm speaking generally. If you have medical conditions or are under medication, follow your doctor's advice.

If we want to talk about what is sin or not sin, there is no end. Anything that is not of faith is sin. So let's not go down that road.

Being overweight is just not good for health reasons, whether you're a little over weight or a 100 pounds overweight. Also, our bodies are the temple of God. So we want to glorify God in our bodies too. I could say that same thing about being underweight and malnourished.
I wasn't aware of any sin in what I ate. But what really brought it home for me, was when my blood pressure shot up to 182/110..All due to excess weight.

So it could come down to do you control the food or does the food control you.

I think that that would be a fair definition specifically regarding food. In a general sense the sin of gluttony would be anything that has control over you, which in moderation would not be sinful.

I would suggest if one were to say they are not indulging in gluttony, even though their waist line is bigger than their chest, that they are in denial. There are a lot of Americans in denial.

It's not about what you eat. It's about what's eating you that causes diseases.

Jesus said that it is not what goes into a man's mouth that defiles (yes it includes the physical aspect) but what comes out of his mouth/heart.

Eating must be done in faith. If one thinks that a dish is too oily and that it will cause his cholesterol to shoot up, then don't eat it. If he still goes ahead and eats with a weak/guilty conscience, then he is condemned -- ie his cholesterol will go up and he will suffer for it. It is what you believe. So if you don't feel the peace to eat it, then don't. But if you have faith/peace to eat, then by all means whack it!

With all due respect, you cannot have enough faith to live on fried foods, cheese cake, hydrogenated oils and not one day have a massive coronary. Wisdom can take you a lot further than faith.

Proverbs 4:7
(7) Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

Faith only comes by hearing the Word, and you have no Word that says you can live on these kinds of foods, especially man-made processed foods.

The only faith you may have would be presumptious and would be just as much tempting God as it would have been for Jesus to cast Himself off the Pinnacle and expect angels to bear Him up.

God is clear.

God gives us wisdom and knowledge.

When we violate what HE tells us to do, we have trouble.

I have found that living according to our emotions is a big part of having health (overweight) issues.

God is so good to us.......... He tells us what to do.. how to do it.

I was hoping for more stories from WOF people who have struggled in this area and have achieved victory... or from those who have struggled and have NOT achieved victory.

Trish shared a great story... wonderful testimony of lining up with God's word and acheiving success!

Anyone else?

Is anyone else struggling?

I know some, in the past, have said they are currently wayyyy overweight... What do you do? How do YOU reconcile it with God and His Word?

If what was causing my blood pressure to rise was too much fat on my body. Why would He just lower my blood pressure, when my back hurt, my feet hurt and legs hurt, I was tired all the time, had no energy, felt disgusted with myself when I looked in the mirror and yet He would provide no wisdom for me to follow, that I can overcome all these things? Even if God healed all the pain associated with being fat, I would still be fat. I didn't want to be fat. So somebody is going to have to do something about it. Sometimes faith is nothing more than taking action to the wisdom that's given.

With all due respect, you cannot have enough faith to live on fried foods, cheese cake, hydrogenated oils and not one day have a massive coronary. Wisdom can take you a lot further than faith.

In the first place, I never said that the Christian should live on junk food. I assuming that all of you here have common sense wisdom.

I said that if eating a certain food bothers your conscience, then don't eat it.

If you cannot believe that what you have prayed over is sanctified, and you fear that it will cause you to have heart disease and so on, then don't eat.

Because what finally condemns you is the sense of self-condemnation for having eaten, not the food in itself. IOW, if you believe it's bad stuff and you eat, then according to your faith...

We are free in Christ. That freedom is what allows us to be Spirit-led. The removal of dietary laws and rules frees us, or more accurately frees the Spirit to lead us. How so? "If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law." (Ga 5:18) The Spirit is inoperative when we follow laws. It is either one or the other, you cannot mix both.

Again, its not what goes in through your mouth but what comes out through your heart that defiles. It's not what you eat but what's eating you.

Cool!

See, there's no need to go on strict drastic diet laws to lose weight.
I agree. Have you heard the saying "it's the small foxes that spoil the vine?" What I discovered was it was the small things that you normally wouldn't think about that was causing the problem, it wasn't the three meals a day.
