It's the 'just my beliefs under another name' ploy. It typically implies that the original believers were mistaken about their own beliefs... which is hubris a level beyond the appropriation and revision of pagan festivals to Christian ones.

Ironically though the same could be applied in reverse. This is where I don't evangelicals realize the implications of this. By implying or stating that everyone else is wrong about their respective beliefs, the evangelical is just opening the door to that their own beliefs are perceived as wrong.
