For anyone interested, this is something I do each day with my kiddies... The points my kiddies earn was an idea that came to me like a gift from heaven while standing in the toy section at Wal-Mart about two years ago.
I bought a box of plastic poker chips, with three colors, and assigned each color a "points value". The whites are one pt. the reds are five pts. And the blues are twenty-five pts. Each. They earn them for good actions and behavior, and jobs around the house. I also can take them away for bad behavior, and not listening first time to mommy. It also teaches them the basic counting system for money, and how to save. They can save their pts to buy a higher ticked item in Mommy's pts store.
My pts store opens each Friday at 8:00 Pm during the summertime, and they get to choose what they want to buy based on how many pts they have earned . All the items in the store have been given a points value. After they are done either buying and or saving, I give them each ten white chips to start their week off for Saturday morning.
The pts store opens for the first time tomorrow night, so I had to get some last minute items to add. Each item is assigned a pts amount, and if something has been in the store for a while, It can "go on sale".
It is a way to promote good behavior, helpfulness, and cooperation among the kiddies. There are three of them, and only one me, so I like the system.
Each day during the hours they would be in school, for 9 am-4pm, they can earn or loose up to three pts per hour. I have also been known to give on the spot pts for an instant reward of super good deeds. Through out the day though, if they are not behaving, I take their pts away according to the offence.
At the end of each day at 8 pm, we sit down, and they tell me all about the good things they did that day. I then decide between the older two (as they are the only ones on the pts system) which one had the best behavior for the quality I was looking for that day. They never know what the quality is until coupon time. It keeps them on their toes The one coupon per night is one blue "chip". (The kiddy, who has received the most coupons through out the week, gets first pick at buying in the store.)
After that is decided, they get the chance to be "rewarded for all the things they just told me about up to twenty five pts. Those are the Bonus points for the day. It works for us, and they look forward to it each day, and especially on Fridays...
I like to think of it as them earning a kind of allowance, and it keeps them mindful of their actions and behavior throughout the day. towards me, and each other.
Lets see, have I forgotten anything about the points system, (thinking) I think that is most of it. It works for us.
