Speaking of olives and cheese...

I wonder how it would taste to get some large green olives (without any garlic, or almonds or anything), and put some cream cheese in them right before you eat them (so the cream cheese didn't get soaked in olive brine). I think I may try that soon.

I've never liked Mediterranean food in the least. It seems like to be Orthodox one has to like the food sometimes from the way people frame it in here :p If so, Orthodoxy isn't for me. I'm just not into that grub...

Good food is Greek.

Greek/Mediterranean food goes beyond the stereotypical and over-emphasized dishes. I'm sure we can find you something that you'll like. ;)

I'm a vegetarian so I'll pass on lamb and such :p....But hey, I grow grapes extensively in my yard so at least that should give me some street cred! Plus cooking with so much olive oil I should be alright...^_^

Have to admit...I'm an enormous fan of Greek & Mediterranean food. :D There's a big Greek population in my city, and a decent-sized Lebanese Christian group too. Good food all around...they definitely know how to make me consider conversion haha. I went Anglican for the coffee, but I wouldn't stay for the food when I compare it to Orthodox food. :D

I'm not all that into Mediterranean food much myself, especially Greek food. Don't get me wrong - there are some dishes that I really dig - but as a whole, the style isn't for me. I tend to think that many of the dishes that are popular in Orthodox circles are overrated... and I LOATHE Russian food! So much of it is SO nasty! Why would anyone flavor watermelon with dill?

I can't think of a category of ethnic food I don't like. If our religion were based on our favorite food though, I'd be Catholic. Nothing better than Mexican food!!!

I couldn't agree with this more! I'll take Mexican for every meal, every day. That, and Italian. Come to think of it, I think that my food preference is from lands that were historically Catholic, whether affected by the Protestant Reformation or not. I'd take Italian or French food over Greek food any day of the week. But I'm sure that if I grew up with Mediterranean food being the "normal" kind of food, I'd probably think that Western European food was less enjoyable.

I'm not a huge fan of Greek food. I like a few things, but mostly, I'll pass.

I used to like the magiritsa that was served to break the lenten fast. Until I found out what was in it! Never again!!

I've had the "monk" version of that, made with fish. Not too shabby. Generally, unless it's in a ground up state (like a sausage, part of why I like more northern and western foods), I tend to not want to eat the lower bowls of an animal.

Maybe your soup just needed more lemon...

It tasted good, if a little too salty. Ignorance was bliss. But now that I know what is used in that soup, I'll pass.

Then there was that time at the monastery when they served octopus. There was a tendril with suction cups hanging out of my bowl and I just couldn't stomach it. Bleh!! After that, I concluded that Greek food just isn't for me.

Oh, I love octopus, squid, and cuttlefish! <I'm humming and kinda bouncy and dancy right now, just thinking about it! >

One of my favorite dishes during Fasting is these squid tentacles, there is a Chinese Buffet that serves them near here. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to afford to go lately... And now that I'm newly unemployed (got the call yesterday), I may not for a while longer.

Lime jello with the little marshamallows, and tuna salad isn't good enough for you now? ^_^ Mac and cheese is filling (I can say this, I was raised Episcopalian) ^_^

I like Greek seafood, but octopus (and squid for that matter) have to be cooked right or I won't eat them. I'm picky, Andrew's Mum has spoiled me.

Greek fasting food isn't bad either, though if you're going to make me fakés (lentils), do me the favour of adding vinegar and tomatoes...Andrew's favourite way to eat them is (brown) boiled with maybe a little onion and nothing else, and rice. YUCK. With yoghurt that's edible, but not strictly fasting. With tomatoes it's not bad though. Fasolada is yummy, especially made in the pressure cooker - essentially baked beans with vegetables. Mmmmm.

Actually, Greek vegetarian food is pretty awesome. After two thousand-ish years of fasting, they've got good at it! There's lots of dishes with beans, rice, lentils... and cheese and spinach pies with flakey buttery pastry (not fasting, but vego and delicious), salads, haloumi cheese in just about anything you want...

Don't write Greek food off yet ;) Particularly since the stuff everyone actually eats is much better than the stereotype! If I had to eat gyros/yiros every day and Greek salad (as much as I like feta), and baklava... there are much better sweets than baklava, too! Galaktoboureko and kataifi are two good ones omnomnom *drool*

Photini, I'm with you on the seafood:sick: Now lamb on the other hand...:yum:

The last time I had lamb (several months ago), it tasted very gamey... like a zoo. I couldn't finish the whole thing (it was a lamb chop). I really, really wanted to like it, but I'm just not accustomed to that gamey taste.

I am a lactovegetarian.

I love the Greek salad.

Those vegetarian dolmas with brown rice are delicious.

Hey, there are Mexican Orthodox and the Orthodox Church is reaching out to those in Central and South America too.
