Yes....

Nine days of consecutive prayers for an intention would be fine (depending what's in the prayers and the intention). The practice comes from the nine days the apostles spent in prayer from Ascension to Pentecost.

What would not be ok is the things that I see so often attached to novenas: "This novena never fails!" "Pray this and you're guaranteed to get what you ask for!" "Mary has promised that anyone who prays this novena will get their intention!"

For that matter, the 15 promises of the rosary are probably verboten in Orthodoxy as well.

Well the irony here is that I don't either. I haven't prayed the rosary once since I was chrismated....not because I'm Orthodox now and throwing all Catholic devotions over my shoulder, but because I've enjoyed my new Orthodox prayer book so much that it has been sufficient. I'm sure at some point I'll pray the rosary. My daughter has asked me a lot about praying it because she and I used to do so when we were Catholic. I'm defending the right to do it, not so much my own use of it.

The Jesus prayer and Psalms are awesome, aren't they Phyre?:)
I used to pray it just about every day when I was Catholic, but I haven't prayed it in years now. I mostly pray the Psalms and the Jesus prayer.

Well Its nice to know that the Orthodox have respect for the Rosary, just as we have much respect for all the Orthodox prayers, and being Eastern Catholic I think i will start doing some Orthodox prayers :)

I've had a novena fail. It was my first time doing one too. Ever since, I can't get myself to do it anymore. :|

tbh it creeps me out when the nuns do it on EWTN. It just sounds scary...lol

Many people on EWTN scare me. As Zoe pointed out, the Lords are weird. But also the Journey Home show with that oddball guy Marcus Grodi...now that's an odd duck. You should listen to that weird whispery laugh he has....totally draculated.

Mother Angelica reminds me of some scary lady hiding in the woods Hensel and Gredel style.

Father Mitch Pacwa reminds me of some Brooklyn priest blessing boxers before a small-ring Rocky fight

The World Over Live show has Raymond Arroyo, a robotic synthoid human who speaks with a disturbing zombie-like quality

That pan and scan camera stuff with Life on the Rock and those teenagers....gives me a creep vibe altogether

Johnnette Benkovic always reminds me of some James Bond villain on her Abundant Life show. Her eyes never close and they're like 100% open all the time.

Strange cast on there....

And yes, the nuns all praying the rosary in unison....a little unnerving indeed....the only thing scarier is the bearded priest on the Daily Mass show on there who looks like he's a total robot....reading and preaching with this quiet, frightening tone

I would watch EWTN on occasion, and I gotta say that there is something I don't like about Rosary prayers with nuns, or Daily Mass as a TV show. I understand that the motives for doing it were probably good, but those things belong experienced in person, not seen on TV.

Agreed. But what's worse is that, if you're going to do it on TV, wouldn't you give it YOUR BEST? That building they film it in, the ugliest Catholic building possible....with this weird faux iconostasis, the most BORING and monotone priests who have ZERO zeal or umph in their voices....their eyes and rigid mannerisms resembling Ben Stein in Ferris Bueller, the unenthusiastic small group in the pews, the strange mix or Latin and English....it's odd to say the least
