Now before you get all doctrinal on me. I would like to state that I know why someone would go to confession. What is not clear to me, is whether or not it is an absolute/mandatory requirement for salvation.

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
Orthodox Only: is confessing to a priest an absolute requirement for Salvation?

No, the Orthodox position is that everyone is saved except the given Orthodox Christian thinking, speaking or believing that everyone is saved.
Or, to put it another way, if you asked an Orthodox Christian, he or she would have to say, "everyone else is saved, only I am lost."
Anything else is speculation and role playing.

Yes, I would say that we take the 1st chapter of 1st John (for ex.) as to why we must have ongoing confession which is consistent with our idea of faith as ongoing through our earthly life in which our faith in Jesus Christ carries us through to the afterlife.

Our basic reason for ongoing confession is explained in the 1st chapter of the 1st epistle of John. This is done in our individual, daily prayer & in the sacrament with our priest as our witness akin to Nathan the prophet bringing King David to confession for his adultery with Bathsheba. Our whole congregation will also render a general confession before taking the Eucharist (I think Catholics do the same) because St. Paul warns us not to partake in an unworthy fashion. We believe in salvation by grace through faith unto our death.
