Last year my Catholic friend had showed some interest in the Orthodox church. So, I took him to a Divine Liturgy. He absolutely loved it. So much that he is considering converting.

We had several talks about the pro and cons of converting. Things like what he enjoyed and respected in the Catholic church and if they crossover to Orthodoxy.

Well.....

One day while having a beer we were talking how awesome beer is. Some of our favorite beers are trappist/abbey, which means made by a Catholic monk in a monastery. Then he asked if Orthodox do the same thing... I said that to my knowledge there are no monasteries that make beer.

So, I think we should get on that. Any ideas?

Catholic monastery beer?... The Orthodox monks probably make wine but not beer.

I have no idea about Orthodox beer, but I do have some quotes to share from Orthodox saints, who talk about drinking wine.

Maybe you could show him one of these quotes. (The first one is the simplest)

48. When watered in due measure the earth yields a good, clean crop from the seed sown in it; but when it is soaked with torrential rain it bears nothing but thistles and thorns. Likewise, when we drink wine in due measure, the earth of the heart yields a clean crop from its natural
seed and produces a fine harvest from what is sown in it by the Holy Spirit. But if it is soaked through excessive drinking, the thoughts, it bears will be nothing but thistles and thorns

St Diadochos of Photiki
On Spiritual Knowledge and Discrimination
One Hundred Texts

The vine produces wine, the wine drunkenness and drunkenness an evil form of ecstasy. Similarly the intelligence - which is the vine - when well-nurtured and cultivated by the virtues, generates spiritual knowledge; and such knowledge produces a good form of ecstasy which enables the intellect to tr
anscend the attachment to the senses.

St Maximus The Confessor - Various Texts on Theology, the Divine Economy, and Virtue and Vice

72. Prayer free from passion is like sustaining bread to those who pray; prayer combined with some degree of contemplation is like nourishing oil; and prayer that is free of forms is like sweet-smelling wine. Those who drink deeply of this wine are rapt out of themselves.

Ilias the Presbyter
A Gnomic Anthology
Part IV

99. We should eagerly drink spiritual wine and become drunk with a sober-minded drunkenness so that, just as those glutted with ordinary wine become more talkative, we too, brim-full with this spiritual wine, may speak of the divine mysteries. Thy cup has made me drunk as with the
strongest wine', says the psalmist (Ps. 23:5. LXX).

The Church of Cyprus is a major shareholder of Keo beer. They also took legal action against an american film company for releasing a porn film where Keo beer was prominently featured in the 'plot', does that count?

I think it does. Church of Cyprus is the largest landholder in Cyprus, and if I am not mistaken vineyards are among their holdings.

The men's monastery in Finland makes different types of wines and liqueurs. Most are very tasty. The communion wine is imported (grapes don't grow there) and blended and sold to all Orthodox and Lutheran churches in Finland. The other stuff is from berries and they've just started making Tsipura (sp?) out of cloudberries. Tasty but strong, that stuff hits your head like no other!

To be Orthodox Christian beer, it has to be made with all natural ingredients ...

Right practice, you know. :p ^_^

As my godfather says when discussing acrylic paint, oil is natural. It is the remains of dinosaurs.

Trappist/Abbey ales are at the top of my list too.;)

Get me some Orthodox Beer, and I will drink to you, my brothers and sisters!:thumbsup:

BTW, one of our Sems. in the US owns a lot of shares in a brewery, and the income goes to assist the students and programs there!

Bless you all,

Mark:)

It would be a contest indeed!:p:D^_^^_^:D;)

I understand that there have been some EOs that are studying for the Priesthood that have taken some courses at our Sem in St. Catherine's Ontario (approved by their Bishop); I hope they don't pick up any bad habbits there. I know first hand that the boys in St. Catherine's can hold their own with the best of them (one of them was my Pastor for some years)!;)

Yes, a drinking problem can lead to a seminarian's dismissal from the seminary. It has recently happened. 'Nuf said.
