  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think it's a common belief that it's impossible to successfully declare opposite day, because that would imply it really isn't opposite day. However, I got thinking about ways to get around this. What if I said via conditional statements, "If today is not opposite day, then today is opposite day."

Similar to the trouble one gets in if they say " I am lying."
So...are they?

Not sure I undersatnd the "opposite day" paradox, OP.

Ah, wikis:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opposite_Day

The was i see these liar paradoxes is to treat them as contradictions.

Every assertion is by nature an assertion of truth. If I say "Its raining" then I mean "I assert itrs true its raining". So when I say "This sentence is false" its implies I am saying "Its true that this sentence is false". Which is like saying "this is a square circle..."

So "this is true and false" involves asserting "T and not-T" from which, according to the principle of explosion, anything can be derived.

So yes asaing "this is opposite day" inplies it is not an opposite day, but it also implies square circles and the exictence of pixies on the moon.
