  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I've thought about the snappis, but I was worried about the choking potential if they break when they get old. I'm still totally at that paranoid first-time mom stage.

After 8 yrs I have never had one break. When they get old they just tend to stretch waaaay out of shape (over time, not all at once). You notice when it just won't hold the nappy on any more. And you have to buy a new one when a newborn is born, because the one you use on your toddler is too big! It's very funny.

Mostly though, mine don't get too old because they do get lost, so we just have a constant rotation happening.

That's good to know; perhaps I will give them a whirl. My dh will probably feel more comfortable diapering that way anyway.

Subscribing and throwing my 2 cents in as well. :)

We'll be cloth diapering. I'm making my own and having a ball. I was intimidated at first, but I've adjusted some things and now it's SOOO EASY. Seriously gals. If you have a sewing machine and are inhibited by the start up cost of purchasing diapers, you can get a free pattern from the internet and try out various fabrics. There are some fabulously thin, super absorbant ones out there.

If anyone is interested, I can post links and such...

For patterns, I started out with Mama Bird's Pattern. I then adjusted it to the much simpler way of putting it together with Dianna's Journal.

I've chosen to start out with 100% cotton flannel for the outside (because you can get such cute prints) with 100% polyester fleece on the inside (next to baby's bottom). The fleece will wick the moisture away from baby's skin. For the soaker (which goes between the layers) I've gone with a hemp/cotton mix as it is able to absorb like a zillion times its weight in liquid and has antimicrobacterial properties. Bamboo/cotton is another popular one to use. These are not as bulky as terry cloth.

I've also done one from an old t-shirt with the hemp insert as well as one with the flannel both inside and out. It will be fun to see which I prefer.

These diapers (fitted) require a cover of some sort. This should be made from PUL or even wool or fleece. I started out by ordering a couple of sets from monkeybunsdiapers off of ebay. She has about a two week wait period, but does great work and will let you choose your fabrics. Still, making your own is cheaper and very easy.

As soon as I get some PUL, I'll try making a couple of covers. I need to learn to knit so I can make some wool longies and shorties.....

The links I've provided for things like the hemp and PUL are fairly random. You might be able to find a better deal elsewhere.....

I got my fleece at JoAnn Fabrics. They call it "cuddle fleece." I believe it comes in different weights but the key to the stay-dry liner is to make sure it's made of polyester, and not cotton. My fleece is heavy enough that when I hold it up to the light, I can't see through it. I don't know how important that is yet, and I'm still pretty new at all this myself. :)
