  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hello everyone! I am a new Christian (I posted this in the New Christian Area, but thought it would also be a good idea to post here for more opinions) and have been reading through the Bible with the plan that I would start at Genesis and go all the way through to Revelations in one year.

But, I was wondering if perhaps starting somewhere else to get an idea on how a Christian should be / act would be a better way to start (perhaps starting somewhere in the New Testament)

OR if one of those reading plans that have you read lets say, Genesis 1-3, Paul 2-3, and something else (like the classic reading plan)

So what reading plan do you recommend for a New Christian?

I am currently doing a reading plan that is for the year. It does new and Old Testament at the same time. You can do either that or I would recommend starting in the New Testament. But any reading of the bible is good, because God can speak to you through any of it. You will learn more each time you read a book any way, so really it doesn't matter where you start. Also having someone you can discuss what you have read and to share any questions you might have is helpful in any reading plan, especially for a new believer. Do you have someone to diciple you or be a spiritual mentor to you? Having someone walk along with you helps make the journey easier. If you do choose to do a reading plan in a year, don't allow yourself to get overwhelmed if you miss a day. Trying to play catch up when life gets you busy can be daunting and make you want to give up. If it goes over a year, it's not the end of the world. The most important thing is that you are growing as a result and being stressed out isn't going to achieve that. I would recommend Multiple by Francis chan. It is a great discipling tool that you can do with a seasoned believer that is grounded in their faith. It will help you to understand more of what the bible says and give you a healthy start in reading And understanding Gods word.

For a new Christian....
Since the Old Testament foreshadows Jesus Christ and the New Testament is sharply focused on Jesus Christ, it makes good sense for a new Christian to start reading the Bible with any of the four gospels.
...this will get you started...
The Gospel of John
The Gospel of Mark
I John
II John
III John
Genesis
Ephesians
Galatians
The Gospel of Luke
The Gospel of Matthew
I Corinthians
II Corinthians
Romans
Psalms
Proverbs

Where you go from there is your choice.

I also recommend having a bible notebook for
questions and or note-taking/recording verses
of scripture etc.
This isn't something to be done quickly...study,
meditate on the Word of God, prayerfully ask the
Lord to help you in this matter.

start with Romans, as it interprets the rest of the Bible - chapters 1-7 explain the Old Testament law of performance and how impossible it is for anyone other than Jesus to obtain righteousness under the law; chapters 8-16 explain the New Testament law of faith in God's grace and how anyone can obtain righteousness through faith. then read the letters to the churches, referring back to the Old Testament when it's referenced; and once you understand these two covenants or testaments of God's will, read the Old Testament. and be prepared to un-learn some things you've been taught about God all your life as you gain understanding of what God has actually said in His word

this will help:
