  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello everyone! I am a new Christian have been reading the Bible with the plan on starting at Genesis and going all the way through to Revelations in one year.

But, I was wondering if perhaps starting somewhere else to get an idea on how a Christian should be / act would be a better way to start (starting somewhere in the New Testament)

OR if one of those reading plans that have you read lets say, Genesis 1-3, Paul 2-3, etc would be best.

SO what reading plan do you recommend for a New Christian?

Good thoughts, Kippers. Start your reading daily in the Gospels to understand God's love shown in the gift of His "...beloved Son"; and I highly recommend you see John 14 to understand our Savior. After readings in the Gospels, you can learn the mind of God for us in the Epistles, where you can see the universal Church displayed, with local gatherings in various cities and what God expects of us in this world.

If you read in the Old Testament maybe once a week you will learn about our Creator-God and His dealing with His covenant people of Israel over the years. It is very interesting to see that the OT is always pointing forward in type to the coming of the real sacrifice for sin in the Lord Jesus, the Christ of God ---Israel's Messiah. In this you will soon have read the whole Bible and be refreshed. It won't be a chore, but very pleasant as you ask God to teach you.

After one is saved forever as a "child of God" by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, that one can learn of all God's "exceeding great and precious promises" in Christ. Stay close to the Lord Jesus as your best Friend and lord of your life forever. Look up always!

There's probably a plan somewhere that has you read a chapter or two of the OT, and a chapter or two of the NT. If you have zero background, that may be a good fit for you. Definitely read the OT, but don't lose sight of the NT as you do. I was raised in the faith, so I grew up on stories from both Testaments, and when I started to do my own devotional reading, I started with Matthew, went through the other Gospels, and all the way through the NT.

I started on a reading plan, but scrapped it very quickly when I started reading way ahead of it and out of order. The way I ended up reading was:

Genesis, Exodus (gives background for entire Bible)
Matthew, Mark, Luke, John
Psalms, Proverbs
Acts, Romans
Daniel, 1,2 Thessalonians, Revelation
Job (great for when you feel sorry for yourself)

...then I skipped around in the reading plan, cross-referencing back and forth as I went.

I recommend going through the Chronological Bible plan found here. It's a one year plan and you read a little bit a day in the order of things that happened in the Bible. Hopefully this will help you. :)

Hi Kippers, I agree with many above, you need to start reading primarily in the NT. When someone asks me where I would recommend that they begin reading the Bible, I almost always direct them to the 4th Book of the NT, the Gospel of St. John, but if you're reading through the Bible, you might choose to do so in order, NT first (especially if you've already finished the first two Books of the Torah, Genesis and Exodus)!

I also know there are reading plans that hit both the OT and the NT everyday (as someone else mentioned), plus a reading from both Psalms and Proverbs. That's another way to keep it interesting I suppose :)

And if you are aurally attuned, there are many translations that have been recorded, with anything from just a voice speaking, to fully orchestrated and dramatized versions which can, if you like that sort of thing, make it very interesting and memorable (because they also include sounds like oxen and ox cart wheels, etc., which can help put you right there in the story (again, if you like that sort of thing).

Check it out here for free if you'd like to.

Yours and His,
David

I believe that there are bibles you can purchase that are set up in a one year reading plan. These plans may contain portions of the old and new testaments each day.

I would definitely recommend that you as a new Christian read the gospels.

@St_Worm2 is correct the gospel of John is a good starting point.
