ONE CONSOL FORMAT ASAP

Thought this idea might diserve a new thread of it's own.

Video tapes used to be in 2 diferent formats for the consumer. VHS or BETA MAX.

Eventually, even though some would argue that Beta Max was better technically, VHS took over and became the standerd we all know.

My point is, WHY should consumers have to either choose what consol to get, or get them all?

Do you think there should be ONE CONSOL format or dont you mind having a choice of 3?

My agrument FOR a ONE CONSOL market is this:

Say PS2 were the chosen format (Im an Xbox man myself, which would have even more merrits for developers):

That would mean that ALL software developers could spend more time getting the game right for the single format, and not have to spend more time/money worrying about portability, and just get on making more NEW games, rather than the same one X3.

Given the single format (like VHS players) the cosol architecture would have to be available to other hardware manufacturewrs to avoid an unfair monopoly. This would mean the that more Electronics companys could jump on the band waggon and make "clone Consols" that would be compatible with all games. This would no doubt bring the consol prices down and down for the consumer.

Just an idea.......

If there were one major console, while it wouldn't be alone enough to be considered a monopoly(due to PC games), but there would be no competition. Whatever they released, we'd buy. 3 consoles makes for excellent competition, and more great games more often for us.

Exactly. 3 consoles keeps lots of competition in the marketplace. The prices eventually come down as a console has been out for a couple years, so that isn't an issue either. There is no way that companies would ever get along well enough to let one company grab the entire console market. The market will continue to change though. New companies, such as Microsoft, will jump on board and older companies, like Nintendo, will most likely go the way of Sega and just make software.

If there were tons of companies making "clone" consoles, that would be terrible. Some would perform better than others due to the company making them and the parts they used. I'm thinking that isn't such a good idea.

I understand where you are coming from with your thoughts, but I just don't ever see it working.

If it were to all boil down to a one console platform, whoever this developer that made it was would not even come close to attempting to make innovative hardware, and no new technology would hit the market. PLUS, we would be so overcharged for it it would be ridiculous. Because whatever they charged, we would have to pay it.
