Yahoo Admits 1 Billion Accounts Compromised in Newly Discovered Data Breach
Coming on top of a previous hack of half a billion accounts, this will have stunning commercial and legal consequences.

The upshot is that if you have a Yahoo account, you should both reset your password and disable the account security questions. The security questions were subject to the break-in, and therefore could be used by crooks to reset your password and gain entry.

There was a time yahoo mail was the cat's meow, except for those of us who preferred a desktop mail client. But they faltered badly, and have been only keeping their head above water. Now, with these revelations of unthinkable security lapses, and horrendous delays in informing the public, it seems they really have deep problems. Melissa, to be sure, has her own very golden parachute, but the general stakeholders look to be in for a beating.

I have a friend who stuck with yahoo because of gmail's intrusiveness, but now it comes out that yahoo was scanning mails all along.

Which email service is best?

Ever heard of reagan email? (I think that's what it's called) There's a yearly fee and it's s'posed to be "private" and safe.

No better spam protection than Google's. I'm currently using iCloud too.

Sure, no problem. The iCloud I use only for two specific reasons, that I have two iPhones (obviously) and because gMail did not have this specific name I needed. iCloud is a new service so lots of free names available! iCloud is junk though. It lets all the spam right in. Plus, automatically opens a new letter even if I don't want to open it. You can't select it and delete it without opening it. That's pretty bad cause you see, I can grab someones IP address and data with just sending him email. He needs to open it is all.

Google is great on spam. Outlook inboxes of mine are nothing but spam. I don't think I ever get a spam message in my inbox on google. As far as Privacy and security go, you can't really know. When you cross the borders of services in one country to the next they have different laws governing what those businesses can do with your data. Even in most cases where big corporations have data centers all over the world, one country has this law, one has that. So if you think about all of the computers that are all over the world with different laws governing who can do what with data you put onto their machines, the only answer to what is the most safe email is a lesson on how to use email safely.

A service provier can claim they are private in a way they don't read your messages. This is stopping nobody from reading your messages if you trust the wrong email from the wrong person and give away enough information for them to guess your password to the account. You are in danger of the same threats that are involved in email phising and hacking no matter where you go if you aren't reading up on good rules in general to keep safe online.

There seems to be a bitter contention between reagan.com and reaganemail.com over rights to the name. The latter has some blistering stuff on their site about the former, including allegations that reagan.com's service is not secure at all. I personally would avoid both of them and the paid service the latter recommends, youver.

There are several secure services. Most of them have their servers strictly ex-USA, because that theoretically gives them more protection against invasive US courts. Startmail.com is one. But if you're emailing someone on a commercial server, I'm not sure what good they would do you.

Gmail is an excellent service, privacy aside. But on privacy, it's horrible. Every link you click in an email is first sent to google servers, so they can track where you're going. Soon the browser Vivaldi will have its own inbuilt email client (as did its predecessor, the original Opera browser), and I might switch to it for that reason alone.
