Once Saved Always Saved: True, False, or Misrepresented?

Adulterers will not inherit the kingdom of God. That is God's word. Go ahead and judge me by it...I am not an adulterer.

Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." (Matthew 5:27-28)

Were we created for God or was God created for us? You seem to be implying that God’s purpose in the universe is to save all humans. However, we know from Scripture that not everyone will be saved. Some willfully choose to disobey God and will be judged according to His law.

On a side note, I don’t understand your comment about people being our brethren and neighbors. Certainly all of our fellow humans are our brothers and sisters because we are from the same Father. However, some choose to disobey and some choose to follow.

Wouldn't OSAS negate the need for many of the Catholic rites such as the Rite of Confession?

No, because any sacrament reassures us of God's forgiveness and conveys Grace for daily living. However, the Catholic Church does NOT believe in OSAS, even if "City of God' does.

I was shocked to hear such a claim coming from a Catholic.

I think you are mistaken.

Hm... Would you please explain to me further as to why you think I am mistaken? I would appreciate it very much if you would. Thank you. Also, there is a thread going on right now in the OBOB about this very topic. Here's the link: No Salvation outside the Church.

It is a very interesting thread to read and follow, IMHO.

It is my understanding (please correct me if I'm mistaken) that Catholics do not believe there is salvation outside of the Catholic Church.

No, that would be a misunderstanding. Of course, that WAS the teaching generations ago, but not now.

You make no sense. The scripture says adulterers will not inherit the kingdom of God. I am not judging I'm simply taking God at his word.

yah . you keep repeating that one . do you have a lust problem or something? i don't understand why that's your main focus .

Once saved always saved, is not what scripture teaches. Although, if you are walking daily, according to the Spirit, sowing to the Spirit, and dying daily to yourself, then you will continue to be saved. But if we stop, obeying the scripture, by no longer continuing in the faith, then we will lose what we have. I hear people all of the time saying, well if they were truly saved then they won't, but that is not from scripture either. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. But the hard part, is giving your life, in total obedience to God, and continuing to do that daily. I will give many scriptures, some that say we can lose our salvation/fall away, and some say that we are supposed to continue in the faith, and live by the Spirit. We are not saved by saying a prayer once and oh it's all done and over with, now I just talk like a Christian, and everyone will believe it. Being saved, as scripture speaks of, is not a one time thing. We are being transformed, and conformed to Christ, being renewed. It doesn't happen all at once. Initially, we are saved from our past sins, and if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we will continue to be cleansed daily.

Galatians 5:4
You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

Remember, grace is what we are saved by, through faith.

Hebrews 6:1-6
Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.

4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, 6 if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.

Hebrews 10:28-30
28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”

Colossians 1:22-23
22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

Galatians 6:7-9
7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

James 4:7-9
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.

1 John 1:6-8
6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
