  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have had plenty of evangelicals and fundamentalists try to tell me that.

Aren't there icons of the Virgin praying in the "orans" style found in catecombs dating from the late 2nd / early 3rd c.?

I pretty sure archeology has confirmed icons being just about as old as the church. It isn't that far fetched to say that, if we have icons in catacombs in the late 2nd / early 3rd c., what's to say there weren't ones significantly earlier...

There are orans icons of the Theotokos dating back to about the 2nd century in catacombs. That does not stop the fundamentalists from making the illogical assertations that they do.

One of my favorite things to do in an art museum is to look at Romanesque paintings of the Theotokos and debate whether it is still an icon or not.
that's pretty much what i did for my whole Renaissance art semester

Michael, what are you looking for or what is revealed to you from studying the grain of the wood?

There is an incredible beauty to the grain pattern of wood. I turn wood on a lathe and am always in awe of the grain pattern that comes to life as I turn the block of wood into a bowl, goblet or pen. That is even more true with woods that are burled.

Wow! The picture of that last bowl looks almost transparent. It is beautiful.

What do you use to get that beautiful varnished look?

Blonde, the wood is usually spinning at 1800-3500 rpm so I can't really see the grain pattern until I stop the lathe. But the very process of watching the bowl go from being a block of wood to the shape I want the bowl to be is pretty spectacular in itself.
