Methinks someone doesn't know what 4th century AD means.

"The 4,000 year old Fresco was restored using a laser" is written directly under the photo.
my roomate this past year actually tried to tell me that icons were not part of the early churchMy biggest question is this: I thought icons were an Orthodox invention that sprung up after the time of Constantine? Isn't that what the hard core fundamentalists would tell you? And yet this icon dates to the 4th century? I guess they are not nearly as late of an invention as they would have you think!

I find it amazing that the icon looks not much different (if any different) than the icons currently in the Church. It shows that with matters of Tradition, there isn't much change. I know, "CHANGE... IS OUTRAGE!!!"
Hmmm...
I never pictured Paul as a goatee type of guy before.
i honestly think that this is why Renaissance Art bothers me so much. and i'll be taking a Baroque art class in the fall.![]()
This is from Michel Quenot's book "The Icon, Window on the Kingdom."

perhaps i could do a study of this for my art history research project...

I love renaissance art......... as art. To me there has never been a time in history(and maybe never again) that the quality and craftsmanship found in Michelangelo's Moses or the Sistine chapel. It is breath taking and hands down my favorite period of art work.

I used to love renaissance art. But not that much any more. The study of iconography for the past 13 years has seriously influenced the way I look at art. The only artist that I am still a huge fan of is Monet. His work is amazing.
I'm a historical textile junkie (and that it putting it mildly). That is why I love renaissance art.
I have a bad habit of doing senseless things like scouring portraits of late 15th century Venetian courtesans to see the variation in chemise neckline treatments or going to museums and looking seam lines in all of the clothes. The first time I met a nun I spent at least 30 minutes secretly trying to figure out what time period her clothing most resembled and way too much time admiring the knife pleats instead of paying attention to the homily.
Yes. I know I am crazy.![]()
