• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Just now started to listen to old radio shows, and feel better already.

Wondering if having to mentally visualize the story and the characters disengages the mind from worry and despair?

I'm listening to it to help with insomnia as well.

The shows are very engaging and require the imagination, and I think this is key.

I'm listening to them in Chicago at WBBM, late on Sundays, and they are all free, and pretty clean as far as language too.

Here is a link to the programs: When Radio Was Old-Time Radio Presented by RadioSpirits.com

Please let us know if you've tried this and if it helps and why.

I'm not sure if it's the same but I listen to classic 50's music collection at youtube and I find them very relaxing.

I didn't live in that period, I'm only 35 but I find these music quite nostalgic somehow and love it!

I also watch/listen to classic 50's to 70's cold-war documentaries on the effects of nuclear weapons and cold war military tech in youtube. They seem to sound like old radio shows too and often, Charlton Heston is the speaker :)

Hmm. I've never thought about the potential therapeutic benefits of old time radio shows. I've listened to them for years, though -- used to pick up reruns of "Lum and Abner" out of a station in Hot Springs, Ark., and listen to them with my father when I was a kid (that was the 1970s and those programs were old even back then). He was also a fan of "Burns & Allen," "Jack Benny," "The Great Gildersleeve" and primarily comedies.

Great entertainment and fantastic memories of my dad, to boot.

By the way, one of my favorite sources for those programs is OTRCat. You can find about anything you want over there and order discs of your favorite shows for pennies an episode.

Have fun!

yeah, its so cool to think about you and your dad listening together, creating a forever memory!

My dad was in radio, so maybe this is a deep longing inside to reconnect with him that got me into this radio stuff tonight.

He got me into the studio and would tease me and play with me creating all these really cool sound effects, like the rain, wind, a train whistle, horse clip clops and so forth.

He had a very strong and confident voice that made me a true believer. My dad was my hero.

The bond you have with your dad is precious.

It is a precious bond, indeed. Particularly since memories are about all I have left of my father. He died almost four years ago. Luckily, I had a dad worth missing and am thankful for that.

Sounds like you developed a great bond with your father, too. That is truly a blessing...
