  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Luther is making a point. The stress is what you are having problem with. a) He was counting on common sense seeing his point. b) He was counting on Christians applying this with some integrity. c) We do not have the full issue or problem that he was addressing here. d) He would have addressed those using the extremes that his words seemingly pointed to.

I see it as "go and sell all you have." It was not Jesus' point though He said it. Luther sees it as unchristian for men to be treating their wives as cattle. "Take heed lest she grow tired and I would not blame her if she did." Putting the best construction on his words.

Luther used "bare speech" more often than not to make his points. In this uncontested age of PC, Luther is refreshing. He is undiplomatic, down to earth, and to some that makes him vulgar. He is at his best and worst, a true German. He is swilling his beer, holding children, and loving his wife to the end.

I would care less knowing if Luther ever recanted this. He would have never written as much as he did. I would like to know how Kate thought about this. She must ahve been a real saint of a woman to have endured all this.

But then Luther said in the end. Burn all my books save two. As if to say, "don't get lost in the trivia" as I see we are doing here.

Cheers,
Cosmic
