...but what about the Christian left?
Yeah, I heard about them. They've been around for, like, longer than I've been alive, and I'm getting old. They seem to have this weird compulsion to help the poor. Not sure where they got that idea...

How do you define the Christian left?

The Episcopal Church, Lutheran ELCA, United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church PCUSA, Disciples of Christ, Moravian Church, The United Church of Christ, American Baptist and many, many others have all been "accused" of being part of the Christian left.

I'm sure the Christian right of today would consider The Society of Friends as being leftist.
Interesting you mention them. The modern Society of Friends (Quakers) is actually very small (around 300,000) but diverse theologically, some don't even believe in God or any theist thought. Many of them would be considered "leftist" because of their views on LGBT, for example.

I mention them often. They were willing to help any person trying to legally resist the draft during the Vietnam War. In my case it was breaking newish ground because my objections did not stem from a belief in a supreme being. The Society of Friends did not hesitate in the least because of that.

Yes. They have historically always been pacifists.

“Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly." - Jesus (Matt 6:1-4)

Next time you say the Pledge of Allegiance be sure and consider the fact that it was written by a man named Francis Bellamy, who was a Baptist minister and a dedicated Socialist, a man you would not consider either a real Christian or a real patriot by the standards you apply today..

While I am thankful for this country, and do what I can to support it, and pray to The Lord to protect and help; I don't pledge to a flag - "no King but Jesus" .

With other people's money, of course. (Tax dollars)
Jesus Christ of Nazareth commanded us to help the poor. " Other people's money " notwithstanding. Helping the poor often requires utilizing resources, sometimes referred to as "other people's money" so it's a good thing.

I guess the right-wing religion forgot the Love Your Neighbor part of the bible.

"Of course you know about the religious right..." Please educate me. What does the right stand for?
They are a group that many on the left set their hair on fire over. The late Jerry Fallwell was the original boogeyman.

They sought many pro family, pro life, agendas in politics.

Just as I said in another thread (about Trump prosecutor Fani Willis) , I don't support the state meddling in the church; and other than providing information to congregations, I don't support church groups lobbying Congress.

It's part of the reason you pay them.
