I hope this is the right place to post this. Are certain denominations more suitable for a person who has "a lot of baggage" or emotional problems, or someone who has an addiction? I noticed that some denominations don't seem to cater to those who have problems. There are no altar calls or prayer after the service. It seems that in the mainline churches, everyone seems more "together", where as in charismatic churches, there seem to be more people that need help. Please forgive me if I'm being ignorant but I've been wondering this for a long time.

Well, I can't speak for other churches, only the one that I attend which is a Lutheran church.

The Lutheran church would not mind having someone with a lot of baggage...a church is like a hospital! We go there to get healed.

We do NOT do altar calls though as we do not believe in decision theology. God chose us according to John 15:16 "You did not choose me, but I chose you..." It is only because of God first giving us the gift of faith that we can even believe in Him, it's not the other way around.

So, please consider the Lutheran church if you're looking for one. Speak with a pastor, he'd love to hear from you :)

I'd like to believe that any church that truly believes in love, forgiveness, and hope would be able to assist in some way.
My church has many programs for that kind of stuff, and it's Catholic.
Mind you, it's a very big church, so this might add to that.

Caring for those with baggage isn't really a denominational matter. You can have two equally Baptist churches for example, where one will care for you and the other will not. What matters is the people within those churches, because we are the Church. It's not a matter of altar calls or any of that so much as people loving you and getting you healthy and strong enough to serve.

It's not necessarily a denomination thing but it can be. For example I would never go into a Catholic church you won't get any compassion there except traditions and sacraments that are unbiblical. You could church hop, I have a little bit -- I went to a pentecostal church and they do seem to care at that one it is nice, though the pentecostal can be a little old fashion and possibly a little legalistic sometimes. I would stay away from the UPC, Catholic, RCC, Reformed, and 7DA. The Baptists won't be very warm they never really have been unless you find a lucky church, I find that a non-denominational church usually differ quite a bit and they are pretty relaxed and glad to help. You should take your baggage to church, thats where you find community to carry your burdens, praise God.

I agree on charismatic churches, they've always blessed me.

Hi SS,

One of the best test to find a good church is one that has great heart/soul praise and worship, have holy communion EVERY sunday, and teach the full Gospel and not some distorted, watered-down milk.

Most churches are like a casualty ward at a MASH, blood everywhere, and they have no idea about first-aid.

If you lived in Australia I could help.

But, many years ago when I was struggling a charismatic church was the only one that put me straight.

Be blessed in Jesus' Name.

I've heard good reports about "The Vineyard" they are in the USA, they differ a lot but they are pretty good even though I think their belief on the gifts is wrong. Been to a Vineyard in two states and they have been great, one filled with the Gifts and operating in them but I wont open a long story :)

 I think it more depends on the actual church, less than the denomination... it really depends on how much love the people there have, not whether or not they have altar calls. I hope you find a good church sis  God bless

I wasn't asking for myself, but for my husband. Unfortunately, I've found that many of the denominational churches we've attended were a bit unfriendly.

Thanks everyone for your kind help.
