• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey everyone!
I'm just a little confused about whether something is an act of OCD or not...

I know someone with OCD continually washes their hands because of it.
But what about someone that doesnt like to wash their hands? Like if someone doesn't like to get their hands wet at all cos they find it horrible, or getting them dirty with cake batter for example and just cant deal with it?

Is this some kind of OCD? I'm confused cos I do this all the time, I just can't stand having any kind of wetness or anything on my hands, and i'm not quite sure why :s, but make up or moisturiser is ok and that doesnt bother me... its confusing.

It's been like this about 2 years or more, i dont remember when it started and i dont recognise any other well known symptons of OCD, so could it be or not? Can you help?

Well if that is all it is i mean just that the only symptom then no its not ocd .
Its like saying that i cant stand public restrooms so i avoid them at all costs ..Is that an obsession ?...no ..i avoid them because there is no privacy and they are often dirty ..Now if this is something that starts to seriously interfere with youre life like if you dont want to take a bath or wash youre hands again as long as you live then yes thats a problem.

Avoidance is a part of the human condition .

Now if you have other symptoms then you should see a dr but dont get hung up on this because just because something may seem abnormal does not mean it is a psychiatric illness ..

repeated handwahing is an activity that someone with oCD can have but there are many other.

best thing is to go to a good ocd site and check the various ways a person can have OCD or if you think you have OCD but don't know, go see a counselor that treats that. when you book the appointment you can even ask if the person diagnoses and treats ocd.
