• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The truth is you can't, you can't know it's OCD, you can't know your not going to hell, you can't know you won't become athiest or agnostic or already are at least somewhat those things already anyway, you can't know anything except one day you and I and everyone else will die. We may end up in hell, heaven or just sleep forever and we won't know till we get there and that s@cks!!!

We can't accept him because we don't even know if we believe he is there. We want to. Who wants to go to hell if it's real. We doubt he even exists.

Worried one will reply I know God is there which proves he has OCD. He is not becoming agnostic like me.

I've been doing pretty good with my OCD for the longest time but I'm starting to have doubts again saying, "How can there be an all -knowing being?" I feel like I'm on the verge of falling away I don't want to doubt God or not believe in him but how do I confront these thoughts?

1) Accept the thoughts are a part of your OCD. You know this if they are A) Unwanted, B) Repetitive, C) Intrusive D) Panic-inducing, E) Time consuming (how much of your day is spent on these thoughts).

2) Accept there is nothing you can do to stop the thoughts.

3) Don't fight the thoughts -- don't shove them back, don't try to ignore them. This will make things worse.

4) Accept you have the power to choose. Belief and knowledge are two different things. Even if you don't have 100% certainty, you still have the choice to believe, and that's where faith comes from.

Yes but it there has to be at least a little truth to them. Sometimes I think what if I could prove God exists and I think no I dont want to then I will believe he is real. I panic because I really feel that way but fear hell as well. It's kinda like when I want my sister to come over part of me REALLY wants her to because I love her. Part of my REALLY doesn't because she tears up my house and keeps me up late.

You give your OCD way too much credit.

Have you heard about the OCD clinic you mentioned?

Yes they have contacted me but have a waiting list. Did you feel these same things? Why would it matter to God if these doubts were because of OCD or not.

Because OCD doubts are symptoms of a mental illness.

Think of it this way. Sometimes you get a runny nose when you're not sick due to environmental factors. It goes away pretty quick.

Sometimes you get a runny nose because you are sick. This sticks around, clogs you up, and often comes with a variety of other symptoms (sore throat, sneezing, headache, and so on). You have these because of your cold, flu, or virus.

The first runny nose, the one without an accompanying illness, represents your run of the mill doubts. The second represents your OCD doubts -- the product of a disease. OCD is the disease. The thoughts, doubts, and fears are the symptoms. You can't control either, but one is exacerbated by other conditions, such as an infection.

Mental disease is so stigmatized. You can't help what happened to you, Raven. Or anyone here, for that matter. You can't help that you have OCD. I believe the last statistic I heard was 22% of people in the USA have some sort of mental disorder. And unlike other diseases, mental disorder is the only one where people are more often not to rally around you in support. This is no different than having diabetes. Diabetes takes medication and management. So does OCD.

I just got talkin with several people that said they never wanted there doubts or thought they were mor rational.
My pastor gave me a study bible I thought and felt I don't believe it why bother and I really don't. I don't believe in angels or that prayer works etc. so I freak out if there is a hell I am going. I still pray, go to church etc. but it's just in case he is there not because of belief he is.

I can't know that any of these thoughts are 100 percent OCD therefore I am in fear of hell. I will never have 100 percent certainty I am not going there.

No, you won't. And you have to learn to accept that rather than continuing to look for certainty that can never exist.

If you can't know for sure whether or not you're going to Hell, and you know this, why do you keep searching for certainty? It's as useless as searching for a purple unicorn.

I don't know. So this is my destiny to live in fear.

You need to learn to cope with fear. Which means facing it and embracing it rather than running the other way.

And until you understand that, I doubt I'll be able to help you.

no but i don't know what to do i hear exposure therapy, just trust him or your not saved how can i do these very opposite things at the same time?.

Exposure therapy is the only proven treatment for OCD. You can go on medication, but that's treating the symptoms and not the disease itself.

If what you're doing isn't working, survey says it's time to try something new. Unless you WANT to feel this way forever, of course. If so, keep on what you're doing.
