  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do people here have this need to discuss homosexuality. I don't really think, with the number of topics there has been on it, that there can be much more to say, or any more answers to get because, to be honest, there are no answers I think when it comes to homosexuality.

Why not, for once, you leave those alone who do enjoy companionship and relationships with others of the same sex. They are no different to you, they choose those with the same biology as their partner instead of those with different.

I agree with you that there cannot be much more to say on the matter. However, until attitudes change and homosexuals are finally awarded all the rights and privileges heterosexuals enjoy, and are no longer considered second class citizens, dialogue must remain open and frequent.

So you do believe it's a choice. Wow. Most people don't.

On a separate note, Isis-Astoroth - don't you think it's a bit odd to start a thread bemoaning the discussion of homosexuality when you just know it's going to turn into a whole new discussion about it?

1) this is a christian forum
2) the bible, the primary holy text of said religion, is not entirely clear on homosexuality.
3) thus, its believers (and others) are divided on the issue
4) hence, debate

Well, I noticed your religion icon and hovered over it to find out about what you might believe. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that you belong to the Order of the Temple of the Light of Lucifer? That means that most Christians are probably going to come from a totally different perspective than you. Maybe we'd like to hear your thoughts, too.

In all honesty, this issue is coming up a lot in the US court system now and over the last year or so. That makes it a "current events" type topic for us, and brings new facets of society and law to debate for us.

As far as us being obsessed with homosexuality, I'd say it's a combination of the following:
1. Not everyone interprets the Scriptures the same way on this topic
2. It's a current events topic in the US
3. It's what many Christians would call "sinful behavior" and they would prefer our government not condone it.
4. While most Christians don't see homosexuals as "less than human", many of us see homosexual relationships as "less than marriage", which causes friction between that group and those that see the relationships as equal.

Does that help any?

They are bored and have nothing else better to do.^_^
I really think it's more like new members come into the forum and want to discuss the topic or else someone comes up with a new angle on it or thinks certain things have never been discussed before (perhaps they even forget).
I've changed my view somwhat after examining the original texts with a companion Hebrew and Greek dictionary. I have no reason to continue to debate a whole lot except when it has to do with translation of a word. The arsenokoites debate on this board was one of those times. Apparently, since someone in theology decided the two root words for this imply this meaning, that it must be the meaning, although there apparently other meanings for these words.
I guess if I continue this I must post a link:
http://www.freeingthespirit.org/Homosexuality&Bible10.htm
But even this link is not enough for some to leave the topic alone and move on to better things. Some are dead set in their ways that it has to be a certain way.

Firstly, my views of homosexuality are not part of this thread, I believe it is to do with more than choice, but that is not up for discussion. Don't take too much from my choice of words.

Secondly, the topic of this thread is not homosexuality, therefore if it becomes a discussion on it, then people are not keeping in topic, and that is not my fault. There are other threads open that people can go to if they insist on discussing it.

How can I not? You flat-out stated "They are no different to you, they choose those with the same biology as their partner instead of those with different." [All emphasis mine.]

Anyone reading your OP would reasonably assume that was your position, so I really don't think I was "taking too much from your choice of words."

Dearheart, I'm not a fool. I wasn't born yesterday. The very fact that you mentioned homosexuality does in fact mean that this thread is, even if indirectly in part, about homosexuality. It's the subject that was on your mind when you stated your contention in the OP. You could have just as easily worded your OP differently, so that you asked why people are obsessed with "certain subjects", and not used the word "homosexuality". (Of course, people would have ended up asking you which subject you were talking about anyway.) But you didn't do that. And because of that, I was simply pointing out that regardless of what your intentions are/were, this thread will inevitably turn into a discussion about the subject. Watch and see. It's already started.

I couldn´t care less what christians consider "sin".
Yet, this topic has political and societal implications, plus religion interfering in secualr matters is a political and societal matter, too. The traditional means of dealing with political and societal issues is to discuss them.
Granted, there aren´t any new arguments to be expected. Then again, I haven´t seen any fundamentally new argument on any topic whatsoever for months here on CF.
Thus, we either ask Erwin to shut CF down, or we take the problem in our own hands and don´t click on threads the topics of which bore us.

There is more to choice than just the reasoning of the mind.

Secondly, this thread I began with one post. I said homosexuality because it's the subject that annoys me the most on this forum. I wanted to bring attention to that. However, if I had wished to discuss it, I would have said my views on it, as opposed to my annoyance at the discussion of it. That was in my words...

Lastly, please don't call me 'dearheart,' you don't know me.

So what exactly were you trying to say?

You never know - I could possibly agree with you. But I don't know how you could not expect someone to reasonably make an assumption based on what you wrote. Based on your past several posts, I find it a bit unclear now. You clearly stated something, but told me not to take too much from your words. So now I'm curious about your statement.

Are you simply referring to the sexual act as the choice?

Fine. You certainly have the right to ask your question - I'm not denying that. But you need to understand that homosexuality is a hot topic on these boards, and any subject that mentions it is bound to evolve into another debate. I know from experience.

I just said what I did because I think it's a bit odd to be discouraged about the amount of discussion that takes place regarding the subject, and then make a special point of expressing that discontent when it will almost certainly erupt into another discussion. Do you not see what I'm saying?

Isis-Astoroth said:

No harm intended, I assure you. It's my way of saying "dear one", or "my child" - as if addressing a young friend. I was trying to temper my words, to show that I don't find disfavor with you - but I offended you instead. My apologies.

Personally I think the reason why homosexuality topics are so numerous is because topics always spiral out of control. And I think that happens because we all love making analogies, but there are no good analogies to make. If someone supporting homosexuality tries to say it is discrimination by comparing people against homosexuality to other types of bigots (like racists) the comparison doesn't really work so it only infuriates the other side. On the other hand if a person against homosexuality compares it to something that they believe is immoral the comparison doesn't work either and the argument is dismissed (most likely angrily). In the end each side comes away with an even less clear view of the opposition, and the confusion and controversy generates another topic.

groundhog, I have problems understanding why you insist on this question, whilst it is clearly not essential, not even relevant to the topic of the thread.
On another note: Maybe I´m not sufficiently familiar with the english language, but to tell from my own language we often use the equivalent term to "choose" in a very loose way in everyday language, without intending to make a philosophical statement about whether choice exists or a statement whether choice exists in the matter at hand. It´s simply meant to signify that we perceive more than one option.
I personally believe that the philosophical concept of "choice" is nonsense, yet I use the words "choice" and "choose" in everyday language on an regular basis, and - as I think - meaningfully in the given context.

So, in the light of her further responses, I would recommend to assume that she didn´t try to say anything about whether homosexuality is a choice or not.

No idea. Probably all of the suggestions others have come up with.

I'm of the opinion that Christians, however, should not be discussing it with non-Christians, except, perhaps, to gain sufficient understanding for some specific cause, or in passing while testifying of Jesus Christ.

Discussing "Homosexuality According to the Bible" is an entirely different matter, and should continue. Actually, there shouldn't be a debate about it, as it's clear what the Bible says, especially when considering the whole picture of sin as depicted in the Bible. But people still argue it.

Although I agree with some points of this analysis, I disagree with others.
Firstly, I think "analogy" is the wrong term.
Comparison - like it or not - is a necessary implication of every process of identification, distinction and discernment. In order to gain insight on the relevances, the similarities and the differences of two things you need to compare them.
Thus, if someone says "I don´t see any relevant difference between homosexual and interracial marriage concerning reason for or against its legalization", it is an offer to everybody to point out which relevant differences he sees.
Granted, these comparisons are often not carefully worded (and I think this is the actual problem, along with people all too willing to take things personally), but comparisons per se (implicit or explicit) are a necessary tool of exploring the world.

I think this is a perfectly suitable answer for the OP. Period.

PS and to all those who think the bible is "perfectly clear" on homosexuality - I call shennannigans. The bible is NOT perfectly clear on this subject, hence the debate. If it were clear, there would BE no room for debate.

EDIT: because, apparently, I'm too dumb to spell correctly.
