I drove to the rally at a high school straight after work. I got there about 3:30 and I line had already formed for about 3 blocks. When the line started moving I noticed between houses the line had wrapped clear around the block. Its hard to say if she was late, because nobody seemed to know when it was supposed to start, but doors opened at 5 and the school band and concert choir kept everybody entertained. Later on, the senior class president addressed the crowd and then the state campaign manager, mayor, senator Evan Bayh and Hillary came out at the same time. They introduced each other in that order then Hillary spoke for about 45 minutes. She did not attack Obama in any way and said she respected and admired John McCain but that he is wrong on Iraq. I was very impressed with how many supporters she had in this very conservative state. While waiting in line there were two anti-Hillary protesters, one had a sign that said "feminazi, jezabel, etc." He seemed angry. A woman in front of me started yelling at him and he started yelling back. A bit further up the line a little kid ran out and ripped his sign and everyone started cheering. The other guy just had a sign that read "don't vote for Hillary" and was very far away. He was on a church's property and I think they made him leave. There were also a lot of Ron Paul supporters, which is common here since the Liberty Dollar thing. I don't really consider them protesters because they just had a truck driving around with a billboard on the back and a few people across the street standing with a sign and handing out fliers.
I was very impressed with how interactive Hillary was and suprised at the enthusiasm of the crowd. In all, according to the news, there were about 3,500 in the gym and 3,000 others in overflow rooms. I saw on the news afterwards that she stayed and visited with the people in the overflow rooms. Both hers and Obama's campaigns have announced they will be opening campaign offices here, which I'm pretty excited about because that type of thing doesn't happen in Indiana, and especially not in this town.
One other point, I have a Obama bumper sticker on my car and I was still allowed in and although we did have to fill out information cards which gave us the option of pledging support to her, they were not looked at and everyone was allowed in.
There were also a lot of Clinton/Bayh signs suggesting who she should choose as a running mate. If she were to get the nomination, although I still support Obama, but chose Bayh for a running mate that would seal the deal for me. Interestingly enough, our other senator, Republican Richard Lugar is said to be helping Obama with foreign policy matters.
