Barack Obama blunders again on the world stage – Telegraph Blogs

On his trip to Asia this week, President Obama struggled to pronounce the name of Aung San Suu Kyi, the most prominent human rights activist in the world. As The Associated Press reports (hat tip: Drudge Report):

As Obama stood next to the world's most recognized democracy icon, he mispronounced her name repeatedly.

Ever gracious, Suu Kyi did not correct her American guest for calling her Aung YAN Suu Kyi multiple times during his statement to reporters after their meeting.

Proper pronunciation for the Nobel laureate's name is Ahng Sahn Soo Chee.

To be fair, I would have messed it up myself. Just posting for fun. :)

Biden turned 70 today, and he wished himself a happy birthday on twitter.

Happy birthday, VP Biden! pic.twitter.com/4wfCw6Fq

I know, a staffer likely did it, but it still comes across as hilarious.

That just shows me that he never took any martial arts either ;) How rude. A person's name is the most precious of words for them to hear... when it's said correctly. How does his administration keep missing what is important, small details... they come off as a laughing stock around the world... and frankly, I'm ashamed of them.

In all fairness that's a heckuva name to try to remember.

I caught that myself while watching news the other day.

At least Ms. Suu Kyi was gracious about it.

It's gotta be a really slow day at the Telegraph.

This gets a big shrug from me. I'm glad she wasn't offended. She's a bigger person than the folks at the Telegraph.

Do people really get offended when people honestly mispronounce their names?

Because wow I should be really mad... people call my house and add all kinds of new and interesting letters to my last name when they try to pronounce it.

Only people with tree parts caught somewhere in their anatomy. Or people looking to get offended in the first place.

Keep in mind that different cultures are offended by different actions.

You don't expose the bottom of your feet in Arab cultures - it's akin to telling people that they the dirt beneath your feet.
