  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Not teaching Santa?

I dont mind Santa as long as it is presented as fictional. Presenting him as someone real takes away from the true Christmas message and promotes materialism.

"Why love Jesus when Santa brings me stuff?!"

The children will then come to love Jesus less than Santa as Santa will appeal to their inherent sinful nature.

Even worse, those who promote Santa as a real person are simply and plainly lying to their children. And it could be understood by a child that if mommy and daddy are going to lie about a supernatural being in this case, they may also be lying about God as well...another supernatural being.

That's why people should teach the real historical Santa who exhibited some traits of Christ.

When I was younger and found out that Santa wasn't real, I was rather disappointed that I was basically told a lie. Now should I have children, I will tell them that Santa is based on the story of Saint Nicolas and how he gave toys to the less fortunate so that they could have some joy in their lives.

We still do the Christmas tree but we make sure that our girls know the reason for all the celebration. To be honest, we never really thought about not including Santa in our Christmas celebration. We don't let them think that Santa is an all knowing entity, he's a man.

I personally detest Satan,Santa or any other pagan replacement for Christ.

I know mean spirited legalism.

My ex was a Christmas junkie, having it forced on my Children and myself turned me against the
Pomp and pageantry.

I never have liked the idea of telling children its about the birth of Jesus, then lies to them,
About some mythical obese kinda drunk looking guy who watches them all the time.

Then the kids offer up little hand written letters, like symbolic prayers to the Norse king and his minion of
Elves.

Alas kids are very smart, they see what they want in Wal-Mart and will play along
With the brainwashed sentiment of the parent.

Its been fun ho ho ho

My husband and I have decided not to do Santa with our children. As part of our faith we believe Santa and the idea of him takes away from the true meaning of Christmas and the birth of Christ. Santa has only feed our society in making Christmas about shopping, gifts, and commercialism. We also believe that Santa feeds the moralistic idea that if you are good you get more gifts and that goes against everything in the Bible. We plan to still have fun with our kids and have traditions in our family but ones that are more focused on Christ. We still plan to raise out children to respect the tradition of others, and that it is not nice to tell other kids there is no Santa. Even though we don't practice it in our house I don't want them going around ruining it for other children that is not nice.

Do any of you not do Santa with your children? If so what other Christ centered traditions do you have in your family instead?

Also how do you deal with the heat of other parents? My husband and I shared one time that we were not doing Santa and we became the world's worst parents ever. I don't know what it is but the Santa subject is really touchy and if you don't do it you become the devil.
seems great...:)
dont worry what the worldly think or say.... they dont get most things about it anyway.

The Coke-cola santa...as thats where that imagery comes from...is a great oddity...
if a guy sat in bright red clothes putting strangers kids on his knee any other time ..he'd be arrested for sure ...

Christmas is not for amusement meant for children. Unfortunately, Jesus has been replaced by Santa and cross by a tree! Too bad.

Hi Bella,

I support you in that goal. Santa Claus, and all that that practice entails, is really nothing more than once again the world trying to create a separate reason for the lost to celebrate a time of great joy for those who believe the truth.

God bless you.
In Christ, Ted

I agree that the commercialization of Christmas has gone way too far. For us, we keep it about family. Christmas is a time for celebration for all. My kids know the meaning of Christmas day and we enjoy a family day full of love and celebration.

How can obese Santa and dazzling tree represent the truth of simplicity in the birth of Jesus in manger and suffering cross?
