i have a full time job as an auto mechanic, and have an offroad performance shop at home, i mainly focus on motocross bikes and standup jetskis, but i also work on atv's, tractors, street bikes, rec bikes, and bigger watercraft. my problem is that the shop at home doesn't make enough to make a living at (i also do no advertising except word of mouth) and i'm getting tired of going to work from 7-6 and coming home to work on stuff till whenever i decide to call it quits, sometimes 2 in the moring, sometimes i only spend an hour out in the shop. i have a very hard time telling people no, and we could really use the $$, but i'd rather spend that time with my wife, also the standup jetski thing, i am the only person in my area keeping that sport alive, and i have a huge passion for it as does my wife.i don't really want to close the shop down because i'm the only person a lot of these people trust, but i just gets old sometimes....maybee this is just another passing phase. i've thought about closing down before, but business always picks up about the time i think i'm gonna do it...grrr

It's important to spend time with your family, but I've gotta say, everyone I know who's in a similar position ends up balancing both occupations for years and years. It's like an extension of you, an important part of you.

I think it's an opportunity to be creative in an area that you're confident in. You help people out, get more appreciation than you would at work, but still keep the stable income and benefits of the day job.

It's not ideal to work so much, but I think it ends up a nice balance, if you can declare some limits for your family's sake. Be firm about days off, no matter how desperate your friends are. If your wife makes plans with you, keep them.

If you have kids, welcome them in the shop, while they're young. It'll slow you down, but will pay off later.

Look at what else you'd be doing with your time....figuring out how to entertain yourself? Let your wife know that she can pursue her own interests during that time. Set some solid structure, so she knows what to expect, and she can make plans. Don't let it control you, especially guilt from clients....and don't let it control her.

Whew! I know what you mean about being worn out and spending all your time working!

Is there anyway you could just have set days to work on your extras? It sounds like you don't really want to give it up but maybe just burned out? Take a little vacation from it and clear your mind.

Hi. Can you get some low cost but capable help, such as from teenagers that you could train? If they could do at least some of your work, this would make your time more productive.
