"My question is, would it be a sin to not get married because of the fact that you don't want kids? I want to become Catholic, and I know about contraception, and how it is a sin. So my question would be if I choose not to get married because I don't want kids, would that be a sin?" - a friend

So, a friend asked me this today and I told her about NFP and the openness to children in marriage, but her real question at its core is , is it a sin to NOT marry just because you don't want children? In all honesty I couldn't really give her the Catholic position on this, which is what she wants (She wants to come home!). She'll be checking in on this thread for your responses, thanks all!

Some people are called to ramin un marryed and chaste for their entire lifes.

Now wether or not that is this person calling or if it be a sin is a hard thing to tell and one best desterned through prayer and spirtual advice.

Rember even becomeing a priest could be a sin.

Well, i think that your friend may feel differently about their objections to parenthood when they fall head over heel's with the person they want to spend the rest of their lives with...i was never a 'baby person'..in fact, i got baddly bitten by both a dog and a baby when i was young, i vowed to have neither, and then i had a houseful! :)

Perhaps the sin would be not marrying someone that God led them to, if the person desired to start a family with her, after marriage...would she be prepared to deny God's will for her life or would she only date a man who like her, didn't want to have children.

Being closed to the will of God is a sin, after all.

Matt. 19:29 - Jesus says that whoever gives up children for the sake of His name will receive a hundred times more and will inherit eternal life. Jesus praises celibacy when it is done for the sake of His kingdom.

1 Cor 7:7 - Paul also acknowledges that celibacy is a gift from God and wishes that all were celibate like he is.

In many cases, to not want children means you are called to have them. :)
