• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Are you able to work?

If you cannot work, what feelings do you deal with about it? If you can work, how do you feel about others who claim they cannot?

How do you feel when others tell you that you should work?

If you cannot work and receive help, is there anyone who tries to make you feel guilty? for example, if you buy a burger and a beer, someone might say, "well, if you can afford a burger and a beer, then you should not accept help."

No, no more. I applied for SS disability in 2011, had my hearing in the summer of 2013, won my case that day and received my first check in Oct, and Medicare the following April.

I have no guilt or shame about being on it. I struggled for so many years going to work and finishing college while sleeping 1 hour a nite, sometimes not even that, it was hellish. I have more than 1 diagnosis, and people sometimes wonder why I often talk of death or not being born. Anyone who thinks mental illness is a day in the park is dead wrong, and when you have 4 or 5 diagnosis's all at once to deal with, well.....you can only imagine.

Hmm... Hardly..
I burned out 8 yeas ago, and i'm still 'broken', meaning that a little stress practically impairs me.
If you cannot work, what feelings do you deal with about it?
Feeling like a useless loser...
How do you feel when others tell you that you should work?
Can be annoying, but they usually mean well.

Especially when it is from family members who are helping support you! It's a pressure that can slow down how quickly someone heals.

I'll be honest I haven't worked in almost thirty years due to both physical and mental disabilities. I miss working because I loved to work. I deal with it as best as I can. Some days better than others. As far people trying to make me feel guilty goes....well...excuse my french but....they can kiss my fanny....they have their guilty pleasures so why can't I? Just because I live on SS disability doesn't mean I quit being human. I learned to live with the fact I can't work because obsessing over it only hurts me and causes me mental problems. Why should I do that to myself? Life goes on and so should we.

Cool.

Sometimes people ask me why I care what others think. Most of it is not "others" it is me and my own thoughts about me. I'm face to face with the person who at one time had no idea.

I don't like being asked why I care what others think. (and no, no one here has said that yet) But I do care what others think. I don't know why. Being asked why I can't just not care about what others think is one more reason I feel like some lesser person. I'm not that independent. I mean, sure, I care what God thinks more, but I can't really survive as a lonely hermit.

It's not that I don't care what people think it's just that I can't let what they think get me down. I just can't. If I do I just can't make it through each day. I care more how God and my family feels than other people do because I've found that most of the 'others' won't approve of anything I do. I'm at the age that I no longer feel the need to worry about so much about the others in life. That is accept for those that are important to me. Do you know what I'm saying?

If you need to take time out to really get healthy again sometimes work is too stressful to go back to so its entirely understandable that some people cant work and some can.

I have learned not to define work in secular terms because whatver we do, we do for Gods glory, and he has prepared us for good works to do in advance. So dont feel bad if whatver you are doing is not paid or you not paying taxes etc.

After all Jesus quit his carpenter job and didnt go back to it. Im sure people mocked him for not working building houses etc when all he was doing was casting out demons etc.

What is more important paying taxes to caesar or casting out demons and getting people whole again?

well , I just feel I have to encourage you with this verse
Isaiah 40:27-31 International Children’s Bible (ICB) said:
27 People of Jacob, why do you complain? People of Israel, why do you say, “The Lord does not see what happens to me. He does not care if I am treated fairly”? 28 Surely you know. Surely you have heard. The Lord is the God who lives forever. He created all the world. He does not become tired or need to rest. No one can understand how great his wisdom is. 29 The Lord gives strength to those who are tired. He gives more power to those who are weak. 30 Even boys become tired and need to rest. Even young men trip and fall. 31 But the people who trust the Lord will become strong again. They will be able to rise up as an eagle in the sky. They will run without needing rest. They will walk without becoming tired.

Good news is you are righteous before God, no guilty feelings needed. Trust Lord and do Good, as the scriptures say, will lead you out of your mess
