  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I love certain Christian bands, but most of the bands I love are not Christian. Do any of you like non Christian bands? My favorite artist is Tori Amos. My favorite types of music are: Gothic, industrial, electronic, ambient, indie,I pretty much like anything except country. Sometimes I feel guilty for listening to some of the bands I like because they are against religion, but they are some of the most talented artists I have ever heard. I guess I can like and appreciate their music, but not agree with their views on God or religion. I can understand some of their feelings on why they believe what they believe. I wonder since Tori Amos is against right wing Christians and also very verbal in her songs about questioning God, what will happen to her in the end. She has led a life that most can only dream of and helped thousands of rape victims. It would sadden my heart for her to have helped so many and not be able to go to heaven. I guess that will be between her and God because I am certain she has led many from Christ and will be held accountable for it. Still, she is very happy and enjoys her life to the fullest, she has no regrets. That is something that confuses me. People who live the way they want who are truly happy and fulfilled and do not have God in their lives. Then I see people who say they have God in their lives but they are unhappy and regret their lives. It goes both ways and I guess it is an individual basis. This is what I have find there are good and bad people in every religion or lack there of.

You have to remember it's not what we do that's important, it's why we do it. I have been told I lead people away from there religious beliefs in a derogatory manor as well.. But again it why I do it, that will prove important.

When you look at "good works" you have to look at them in the scope of eternity. (Beyond this life.)
What would be better, to live a privileged life, and being condemned at the end of it, or To live a hard life, and finding God because of it, ensuring an eternal relationship with our Heavenly Father?

Good things are often times placed in a context that corresponds with our time here in this life. And so are "Good works." All the "good" this life has to offer is only a matter of perspective. Helping people in need whether it be with hunger, a job, or even a rape, is a "good deed" compared to the other things we can do. But when we look at the "big picture" (Eternity) and the fate of those who chose to side with the person helping them through a tough time, Over God.. Then really how Good was that deed? Again, if you only look at what this life has to offer then she is a saint for what she does for those people.

As far as listening to her music or anyone else's, Do what you will, till your convictions won't allow it anymore.. We are expected to change, but not all at once, and what my change looks like, may not be what you look like after your "change."

I personally don't listen to much music anymore, but I do love the movies! Especially war related, and shoot'em ups! Alot of people look down on the violence and mess associated with stuff like that. so I simply don't invite "those people" to see them with me, nor do I talk about those kind of movies with "them."

Just because I have found enough freedom to listen to what I want or to watch a movie that others can not, doesn't mean I should convert those around me or even pollute the people around me with what I like, or have the freedom to enjoy.

Paul speaks of this in: Romans 14 Substitute the idea of "Meat" with Music when you read the chapter.. There is freedom in God, but not to all, especially in "disputable matters."

It isnt even your job to change. The Holy Spirit will make the changes as you can allow. At some point some things will convict you and you wont desire them any more. The words if nasty or blasphemous will convict you quicker. The national anthem isnt a Christian song either and who would say thats wrong?

You new life is about freedom from sin. not about worry. Let God be God and you just be concerned about Loving God, and Loving others as you love yourself dear heart.
It does get a lot easier. promise.

Isn't it strange that if Christianity is true, and Christian musicians truly have God living inside of them, that the majority of their music is god-awful (pardon the pun)?

Just sayin.....

I know the devil has all the really good music ...lol. If I could just find Christian music that sounded like the music I love.....

I wish people would stop making such a big deal about christian music, or what is or is not christian music, or satanic music.

I like many bands, and none of them are christian bands, and I'm a christian. I like heavy metal, power metal, you know, the dark and heavy bands from the frozen lands of Finland and Sweden-- Finntroll, Sonata Arctica, Dream Evil, Nightwish, Hammerfall, Stratovarius, etc. Finntroll's lyrics are mostly in swedish, concerning the slaying of christians, but thats what trolls did in the dark ages, if trolls would have existed. They sing as if they were trolls-- and they incorporate a sort of finnish polka in their songs, its sometimes a funny combination.

Then there's the classics like led zeppelin, the who, beatles, you know. A lot of music is good-- I just think christians shouldn't get bogged down with "Is this music christian or not?", and just listen to the music that sounds good. If you feel guilty about "supporting" the artists, just don't buy their music, if you absolutely musn't help them out.

But dont let it get in the way of what music sounds good.

It's about what the message of the music is too. is the message dark and violent? is it sacrilegious? it's programming. Garbage in - garbage out.

and I happen to think Christian music is the best. It praises God and is loving.

Not about killing trolls or whatever.

It's important to note the difference between fulfillment (that being with Christ) and self-satisfaction or satisfaction in the world. Just because someone without Christ has the look of happiness/confidence/fulfillment/satisfaction does not make it so. In fact, it's not.

Garbage in = garbage out. God tells us to guard our hearts because they're the wellspring of life.

The bible also tells us that 'God is not mocked, and all will reap what they sow.'

As for the sad christian, happy sinner quandry, there are plenty of happy rapists, child abusers, cheaters, murderers, thieves and dirty politicians around. So what? Are their victims happy?

There are also many christian sufferers of, rape, child abuse, depression, health issues and bad life experiences. If God waved a magic wand over every christian the moment they became one to make their life wonderful, the discipline and faith required for the christian life would be unnecessary.

I don't know much about Tori Amos, but the little I've seen of her video clips showed her acting provocativly. So in one hand selling sex so to speak and in the other helping rape victims. :doh:Pink is fairly similar. On one hand denouncing women being used as sex objects and on the other showing her boobs and dancing around in skimpy clothing.

Sex = money.

That's why Gods standards are the only ones that really count. Because only he is perfect and can show people when they're behaving so wickedly. Pink seems to have a pretty good heart but that doesn't justify everything she does (nor does it justify christians). By any stretch. Sin is sin because it hurts people.

The ends justify the means. If I murdered the leaders of a tribe to convert the rest to Christianity, would that be justified?

What about working hard, setting goals and not worrying about a supernatural nanny for which there is no evidence other than anecdotal and unfounded claims?

Here's a shocker:
We know we have this life. At the very least.

No one has come back from heaven or hell and said what it's like. No one has risen from the dead. We have absolutely no knowledge of what, if anything awaits us after our inevitable demise, as well as many other denominations coming up with different conclusions to the same question.

In my opinion, a person should do good things for the sake of doing good things. You have an internal moral barometer that judges actions based on the golden rule, "Don't do to others what you wouldn't want done to you". Judging someone because they don't believe the same way you do (as you are doing with Tori Amos) is dishonest.

OP, Listen to what you want. It's life's universal language.

Guard our hearts against what exactly? Music? Seriously?

Statistically, all those people you listed are more likely to be Christian. I still don't see a point.

There are also many christian sufferers of, rape, child abuse, depression, health issues and bad life experiences. If God waved a magic wand over every christian the moment they became one to make their life wonderful, the discipline and faith required for the christian life would be unnecessary.

So why doesn't he do it? It would sure make things a lot easier for a lot of people, and clear up confusion as to what faith is correct.

God advocates slavery, genocide, child sacrifice and rape in the Old Testament. He is also a jealous god, which does not denote an air of perfection, but of weakness and insecurity. Women are also regarded as property in many instances in the bible. If these are God's standards, I'm pretty sure my moral compass is superior in almost every imaginable dimension.
