The best source is Josephus, being also written closest to the date. Remember though that Josephus is biased, being both eager to excuse the Jews' behaviour to Roman occupation, while acting as an apologist to his patrons the Flavian Emperors. His works are freely available in good translations.

As Gandalf told Frod, ' Your small fire isn't hot enough to melt gold, It has barly harmed the ring.'

To melt gold you need high temperatures and a stone building, clad in planks of wood with cloth drapes is not going to generate the temperature to melt the gold that plated the walls inside the temple.

Matthew 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things?
verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another,
that shall not be thrown down.

What is the source of the story about the melted gold in the destroyed temple in 70 AD?

Any other information/sources about this beyond that found here?
There is a Burnt House Museum in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City open to the public. It is near the Wailing Wall. It contains what archaeologists found that remained of a house burned in 70 AD. Ancient armies may have taken brush and timber into a city when they wanted to set fire to it. Even stone structures had wood roof timbers, wood doors, floor joists, furnishings, firewood for cooking, etc.

There was a great fire that destroyed much of Rome. It was started on July 19, 64 AD during the reign of Nero - Tacitus.

Aren't you limiting yourself to a scientific explanation?
We are discussing God's judgment.
Jeremiah 21:
4
Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Behold, I will turn back
the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you
fight against the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who
besiege you outside the walls; and I will assemble them
in the midst of this city.
5 I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand
and with a strong arm and in anger and fury and great wrath.

Deuteronomy 32:22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger,
and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume
the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations
of the mountains.

God uses miracles when they are needed, so a scientific explanation for a non biblical event is the most reasonable explanation.

With jesus's resurrection the temple was no longer needed.

The residents of Jerusalem rejected Jesus’ teachings about non-violence. Their leaders did not accurately consider the costs of war. According to Josephus many Jews died of famine during the Roman siege of Jerusalem. The Romans eventually broke down their wall. They killed or captured the Jews who remained.

Luke 14 (WEB)
31 Or what king, as he goes to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an envoy, and asks for conditions of peace.

It was told historically in the accounts written about the out of hand combat when the city fell. Titus almost got killed himself when he tried to stop the ransacking of the temple. Josephus was wounded in the battle. Once inside, the troops could not be contained or stopped. These troops had been outside the city for years and saw hundreds of their own get slaughtered while attempting to break in. Wave after wave of Men Women and children tried to storm the temple to stop the destruction. The bodies were stacked like cordwood on the steps as they were slaughtered. Their blood filled the area around the temple.

The Romans did not defeat Jerusalem. The different sects of Jews defeated themselves. They had food stores, livestock and all the water they needed to last for years. Arguments between different sects led to food stores and water sources being destroyed. Finally, starving and dehydration left the defenders unable to put up much of a resistance. The infighting led to the defeat of Jerusalem.

Also solid pure gold does not need high temp fires. The floor, walls and ceiling of the Holy of Holies were covered in plate gold. I forget where exactly, but I read a forensic study of the entire destruction within the walls from the time the Romans broke in until the Leaders finally calmed the rage down.
