  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No prophecy of Scripture COMES from someone’s own interpretation

2 Peter 1:

20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation.
Was Peter talking about the writing of a prophecy or the interpretation of a prophecy after it had been written?

It was the former:

21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Peter pointed out that the prophecies in Scripture did not originate from humans (prophets); Prophecies originated from God. Peter was talking about Bible writers, not Bible translators or readers.

In fact, it is impossible to translate Hebrew and Greek manuscripts into English without the translators' translating and interpreting the original languages. Different translators can interpret exactly the same manuscript text differently, producing different versions of the Bible.

As readers of an English Bible, understanding a text inherently involves interpretation. The text "They were carried along by the Holy Spirit" is printed on paper. How do you represent this sentence to make sense of it in your brain? That process of going from textual representation to brain representation is technically called interpretation. The field of hermeneutics gives some guidance to this process.
