  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I dont have any motivation for my grades anymore. I really dont care what I get on my GPA anymore. Last year I was all concerned about what I got, but now I dont care. I dont really care what college I go to, either. I dont care what job I get either, they all seem the same and so pointless. Is this healthy? Is it normal?

I'm almost positive I don't care what you think

Healthy is a relative term, as St. Thomas Aquinas would tell you. :) Normal, another relative term. Philosophy aside, here's some theology to get you ...

You're not the only one to be apathetic like this, Charlie. I've struggled with something similar, yet different, lately as well. But do you want to know what I realized? As much as it would be easier to just stop doing homework, stop going to school, stop learning, that's not what you're called to do right now. Your vocation right now is to be a student.

God will make you holy not in spite of your schoolwork, but because of your dedication to school. He uses (and often places us in) our current situation to make us more like Him. And so do you know what that means?

It means that to reject this, to be unmotivated, is actually to reject God and the means by which He has chosen to make us holy. Not only that, but choosing not to give our best at school will likely mean limitations later on. Those are limitations for ourself, of course, but it also limits what God can do with us. And I don't know about you, but my current situation isn't frustrating enough to give up what I don't yet even know (what God might want to use me, His little creation, for).

I agree with clskinner. Your duty right now is to be a student. Maybe you may not like it, but that is where God wants you. You may not realize it, but in general, your whole life you are going to be jumping through hoops to get to where you want. I'm taking a bunch of AP classes that have nothing to do with my intended major in hope that I will get to focus sooner on the courses I want to take in college and get the G.E. credits out of the way. If I have to take a course I don't want, I just try to think of it as something that will help me get to where I want, even if I don't want to take that road to get there. This is the road God wants me, and you, to be on! I've also realized that we can learn awesome lessons in humility by being in situations that we don't want to be placed in (ie, not wanting to take Trig, but do it anyways), and there may be a person you meet in that class who you will get to make an impression on and *hopefully* spark up their will to move towards the Son.

Everybody goes through those phases as a teenager. I wouldn't call it healthy, but it's something we've all been through.

My only advice is think positively. You'll start to find interest in some topics you cover in school; it may be history, science, math, or even English.

It wasn't till my senior year of high school went I actually started to enjoy learning. Now, there are few things that I enjoy better than a quantum physics lecture. (I'm not joking)

You are wise beyond your years. LOL! ;)

I will get to focus sooner on the courses I want to take in college and get the G.E. credits out of the way.
And you'll get to register earlier, which will mean taking classes that are actually worthwhile - those classes that are "must have's" by "must have" professors.

Now this is REAL wisdom. No joke this time.

Hearing that almost made me spit out the Milky Way I was eating from laughing...I think I have a general overview of that in my AP Phys. class this year. I'm glad someone enjoys learning about moving electrons though!!
