  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No Compromise at the Border.

What is so selfish about wanting people to be prepared?
Because you want them to be prepared to go without pay in order to put pressure on the rest of us to solve a problem which only exists inside your own head.

I just feel that people should do all they can to prepare for the tough times, so if you are living paycheck to paycheck then maybe they are not preparing when they can.

How much do YOU prepare for your employer to arbitrarily decide NOT to pay you for a week or a month or a year?

Except that they will get backpay, so in that sense they are not working without pay, but if they choose not to work they do not deserve back pay.

What is so selfish about wanting people to be prepared?

Everyone should have a rainy day fund.....however, the vast majority of Americans live paycheck to paycheck....and without a doubt, a $17 per hour single mother working at the TSA is going to struggle to pay childcare, rent/mortgage and other expenses.

That's a very interesting post.

1. I feel for you if you suffer from crippling anxiety and are unable to work. It is good you have support.

2. I am confused why you would sit in judgement of people who live in the real world when you don't seem to have any experience in this area.

I have a family member who has a psychological illness so I never take that lightly. We work to provide support and help as we can and, indeed, it helps expand out how compassionate we CAN be toward others whose lives we may not fully understand.

I was also once one of those people who had a job that didn't pay very much and as such there was NO WAY for me to live other than paycheck to paycheck. I hope I NEVER FORGET how hard that was. Because the minute I forget those dark days is the minute I no longer deserve any compassion for myself should I have a problem later on.

This is the nature of the Golden Rule. And it is the nature of Christian Grace: none are deserving of our help but we MUST be willing to grant it freely knowing that we, too, are undeserving of anything.

...well, childcare and gas expenses could be negated for starters.

...you're expressing opinions about people who do work...but you don't?
You see I want to work, but there is no magic ball that tells me I would not fail in the workforce ( due to my disability, so I go off what I learned from family about preparing and not wanting to stop working. I also figure that certain bills keep going. Do not pay your rent you get evicted. You will lose your lights if you do not pay that bill. You can losw your car. Foreclosure takes longer though, so unless the shutdown goes for months and months that is less likely to be an issue.

Perhaps it wasn't clear: there are many who can't afford CHILD CARE. The option then is "go to work and leave a toddler unattended for a day or stay home.

WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

I have CP, so I probably could work at an upper level job, but could not get my foot in the door I am scared that if I try and fail I will lose my benefits and as young as I am (27) it would be very hard to get them back.

Well, if you leave the toddler alone there is a good chance you would be incarcerated, but the fact remains that if you do not go to work you still will not get paid the ONLY difference is how much backpay you will get when the government DOES re-open you would not get paid for the days you do not work ( especially if you are paid by the hour).

Understood. And, again, I feel for you. There are often things well beyond our control that keep us from being able to make a solid living. I wish the best for you.

Hopefully you can understand the stressors that many other people experience in their lives.

Fortunately for you, the Social Security Administration is fully funded. 800,000 + plus government workers are not so fortunate.

I get staying home to a certain extent, but the people I know that worked by the hour or for a long period have explained to me that working by the hour no work=no pay, anyway and do that enough=get fired.

I am glad I cannot be as hard-hearted as that. Perhaps it comes from direct personal experience of being poorly paid and living from paycheck to paycheck for a part of my life.

At one point I had gotten my masters degree and took a job as a lab technician for a major university. It paid horribly and I had student loans, crushing rent (based on where I was living) and expenses that I couldn't cover if I lost even ONE paycheck. And no one was going to put aside those debts for me if my employer decided to take away my paycheck for a week or two, even if I promised to pay when they paychecks started coming in again. That is how the world works.

It is hard and harsh for many out there. Be thankful that systems exist to help you. It makes me proud to know that at least some of this country takes care of people.

Take care.

Paying MY MONEY into a system that helps and supports those in need and amplifies by input by pooling the rest of the population makes me PROUD to be an American. We need more of that.

We need to ensure that people who cannot make ends meet through no fault of their own have a chance at living a good life.

I am glad for dogs4thewin that I am able to help support that system. Because I know there but for the grace of god go I. I know that one day I won't have a good job with good pay and good benefits. Could be tomorrow, could be in 5 years, who knows. I am just glad to be able to support the system while I can knowing that I might one day need it as well and knowing that I'm doing some good for those who need it now.

My deceased father also taught me that life is not fair. It makes no sense to my brain to not work and get no backpay because it is also my understanding that that is how working by the hour works no work=no pay I would think that that IS the real world and as such how the government works.
