  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

In the old days you didn't have modems. You just had telephones, and they always worked.

In the old days, you walked out side and actually said "hi" to your neighbors. This in the days when computers were only in very large businesses. You communicated via mouth and letter writing.

I miss the days where you could write a letter and attach it to a pigeons foot and open the window and let it fly away to the sender. Communication used to be more elegant and magical back then.. not the ugly thing it is today.

That sounds wonderful for a day or two. I could take a break from all the work.
It would be annoying to limit communication though... i think the food might start going bad too.
But this could be worse for many others and society in general. However this is unrealistic.
We always have access to power and electricity.

I lived without electricity for 10 days after Hurricane Ike came through my city. It actually caused us to spend more time together as a family. Power in Puerto Rico has been out for pushing a year in some parts and has always been unreliable even before the storm.

What I'd miss most is being able to look up information because nobody even owns a set of encyclopedias any more. I also couldn't work because the patient's med charts are on computers and access to the medications is via a computer. Occasionally these shut down for a couple hours for maintenance and upgrade and those hours are a pain in the butt trying to meet a patient's needs.

How many people sent letters this way? They were called "homing pigeons" because you had to have a pigeon from the place you wanted to send the letter and it would simply fly home with it. They weren't mailman.

Yeah, I know that trained squirrels were usually more of a luxury. They'd simply wait for you to finish a letter then they'd bite down on the letter and run out of the house and go to wherever you needed to send it. Sometimes they'd car hop for extra speed.

Definitely inconvient. But people are resourseful.
When I said we always have power, I was thinking of so many engineers and electricians i know that can create things with what they have. There are smart people like that who can work on and fix the problem of absolutely no power. And there are such things as batteries and generators, etc. which is why I said it was not really realistic. But in a scifi world it could happen.
That is great you guys were able to spend those 10 days getting closer. I think the most I’ve gone without was a day or so.
That’s frustrating that Power is so unreliable in parts of Puerto Rico.

I did that up until dial up internet was abolished in our home (2004 ish). Dial up was a nightmare, especially when you'd be doing homework on ask jeeves (lol) and someone would call your home phone
