Hello!! I am about to purchase a new Bible and they have both the NLT and NIV in the kind I want. I own one NIV but I have never had an NLT. I can't decide if I like the way the NLT reads so I am having a hard time deciding. I also am about to buy a study Bible that is NIV and I feel like having 3 NIVs would be a little much so I thought an NLT would give me more variety in my studying and might allow a new perspective. I would love any thoughts or opinions about what you like and don't like!!! Thank you!!!

I'm slightly biased against the NLT and NIV and read the KJV/NKJV/(gideons)ESV usually, although I'm reading the RSV currently. (Revised Standard Version.)

The NIV is a much better translation than the NLT. If you want something different, have you considered the ESV?

I have! The Bible that I really want only comes in the NIV and NLT! I appreciate your feedback!

It is always good to have a different translation to compare.
Sometimes looking at a different translation can shed new light on a Scripture passage.
Compare Zephaniah 3:17 in the NLT and NIV.
But these days having a different translation for study I think is superfluous.
Zephaniah 3:17 - Bible Gateway
Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing."

Hi; good to see you.

You might also want to compare the King James.

I don't like either---NIV nor NLT. (The latter being a Translation and not a Version).

I prefer the NASB or even the ESV (if you want a more modern speech item.)

Check out an app, if you can, HOLY BIBLE that can also give you commentary for a dollar tho app is free. THEN you can compare many versions at the same time while reading!

The NIV is closer to the original languages than the NLT. It is more "literal" and the NLT is more "dynamic." A translation committee decides upon a translation philosophy to try to adhere to consistently throughout the Bible. If you wanted an English translation that was a word-for-word translation from the original languages, you would look at an interlinear Bible, but to understand it, you would need to know Greek grammar (or use the Bible publisher's notes indicating the grammar). If you wanted the translators to handle the grammar for you so that it was more like English, then you would go for the NASB (I don't know where the NKJV lies in the literal-dynamic scope.)

If you wanted a translation where the translators converted Bible references that required some knowledge of the culture of Bible times into modern equivalents, you would look at a very dynamic translation like The Message (which some people would say is not really a Bible, but can nevertheless be very helpful to some). The problem with dynamic translations is that they are the farthest from the actual words written/spoken in Bible times (some being God's actual words). The literal translations are the closest, but are more difficult to understand.

Personally, I am of the opinion that using the translation that is the closest to God's words is best (in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek), and then learn how to understand it (an ongoing effort). However, if that is going to be so difficult that you make too many errors or won't want to pick up your Bible, then go with one that you will.

If you do not have trouble understanding the NIV, I would go with that. I like the NLT, but use it as a way to understand a passage when I am having trouble understanding the NIV translation of it (sort of like a commentary). There's nothing wrong with having several copies of the NIV. You could always give away the one you use the least if you wanted to. However, if it were a study Bible, it still could be something you would want to refer to in the future.

You really should look at all of them closely before you choose.

The ASV and KJV are the best ones still to get for accuracy. I have looked at the ESV a little and it seems to be okay.

Stay away from the NIV and NLT. I am really surprised by the posts promoting the NIV.

For example, Acts 8:37 in the NIV is completely cut out. Yes, its missing and thats not the only verse missing too. It also changes the context of the verses changing the meaning.

You should really do your homework on this and not just go off anyone's word.

Well, I don't like debating the KJV, and that's off topic for this post. It is clear she is choosing between NIV and NLT. If one does not have some understanding of the connection of each translation to the source manuscripts and fragments, then I do not see how he can argue for the accuracy of any particular translation (although everyone can have an opinion). Who wants to argue that the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic is less accurate than the KJV?

Acts 8:37 only exists in some of the late manuscripts. The early manuscripts contain the gospel of Luke without this verse. I like some of the word choices in KJV, because sometimes they are more exact translation into the English, but the KJV has less translation-principles-based accuracy and lacks footnotes like one would find in the NKJV indicating why Acts 8:37 is missing.

Most replies are actually saying to get another version, but between the NIV and NLT, go with NIV. I would agree with that statement. Personally, I lean towards ESV and CSB if one wants a modern English Bible. So, not really promoting the NIV so much as saying between the two....
For example, Acts 8:37 in the NIV is completely cut out. Yes, its missing and thats not the only verse missing too. It also changes the context of the verses changing the meaning.
It is missing because the NIV and KJV come from different text families. The alternative question is why do the other texts have the additional verses? Most scholars believe they were added at some point, usually we can say when (and sometimes by who) based on the manuscripts we have.

But to answer the OP:

Between the two, I would choose the NIV every time. But personally I would choose an ESV Bible for a modern translation.

But this thread would be better suited to the "Christian Advice" or "Christian Scriptures" forums. :)

Hi Ellie

Both the NIV and NLT are good translations. The NIV is a little more literal than the NLT. But the NLT is a pleasure to read, and has some excellent scholars on the translation team. I use the NIV for most of my reading, but for more casual reading I still use the NLT (which I used solidly for 8 years!). I also refer to the ESV though it is a lot more "wooden" and does have some questionable translation choices in it!
