I have never been so defeated by a video game. Ever. And I have been playing video games since the 70's.

I can only compare this entire game to a typical end-game boss level, on hardest setting.

Does anyone here have a difficult experience of Ninja Gaiden, or is it just me?

Same here. It is the first skill based fighting game I've seriously played and it is kicking my tail. I'm getting better the more I play and try not to get too frustrated as I'm sure if I keep on till I master the techniques, it will get easier.

At first I was really frustrated. It still gets frustrating but at least now I know that it is a matter of skill. I'm starting to develop reflexes and get used to using different techniques for different situations. I'm still just in the Ninja Fortress (haven't managed to beat the 1st boss yet  ) but I'm not as worried about that at this point as mastering the techniques and getting proficient at the game.

BTW, any tips on the 1st boss? I mean does he have any tells that give away what he's going to do and what are some basic strategies and techniques that are effective? Awesome game. Just intensely challenging. hehe

Only attack him twice. If they those attacks don't hit retreat then move in for another hit. Also, dodging is a great move to use on him.

I found the quickest and easiest way to defeat the 1st boss is this:
a) Lure him against one of the long walls (from a distance of course)
b) As he nears, do a wall run over him.
c) When above him (or near) do a Y-button strike, block-roll, and leg it.
d) Repeat.
You can defeat him unscathed using this method, and because you're both against a wall you get a good camera view.

Yes, I've improved greatly since my whinge ;) Here's how I defeated the next two bosses (untouched)

2nd boss (Samurai horsemen):
Many guides tell you to defeat all the mages first (floating magician characters). Forget that.
a) Stay at your end of the bridge facing the horseman as he charges.
b) Hold the weapon charge-up button.
c) Let it go when he's close. You'll strike through him out the other side.
d) Bash the Y-button a few times to strike him.
e) Dodge out the way. He'll counter attack.
f) Jump around until you've got the original position back (you at one end, him the other)
g) Repeat.
Ignore the mages, they'll fire off shots at you, but if you keep at one end it's easy to dodge them.

3rd boss (big fat electric guy on airship)
On your first encounter you'll get whipped and wonder how on earth to defeat him. Try this:
a) Run around him at a distance to dodge his 5 blasts.
b) As soon as he's shot off his last he'll recharge (weapon upright, glowing blue)
c) Run in there, jump-strike (Y-button)
d) Strike from his other side once. Be quick.
e) Block-roll away. He'll lean back to counter you. Find the distance you are safe from the blow.
f) When he can't reach you he'll try and recharge. Guess what? Go in, strike him, and repeat c).
When you get this method right you'll finish him off with him ever getting another shot out. This is good because when he gets angry he'll be firing off like crazy. And you'll die.

What I've learnt from this game is that the bosses are fairly easy when you learn their routine. Hope these initial tips help.

I finally gave up. I was getting a lot better at it but it was becoming more like a job to me where I had to make myself play. I'm more into strategy type games and RPGs than games that rely solely on hand-eye coordination and reflexes. It takes nothing away from the game, it is no doubt an awesome game, just not my cup of tea. I took it to EB games and traded for Splinter Cell, GTA3 and Nightcaster. I'm having a total blast on SC, although I think I'm going to start over as I've gotten past some points purely because of AI limitations and I want to do it right.

Hahaha... I can't get past the first boss either. I played it one day, then quit for more than a month. Then I played it again. That was a few weeks ago. I usually play RPGs, or as of recently, Halo ;), but I thought that I'd give Ninja Gaiden a go since it was rated so highly (plus I wanted to see what my new Xbox could do). I like fighter games, but I've never been really good at them. There're usually so many moves *cough*Tekken*cough* that I give up on becoming proficient. I'm just not as good at games like this. I love RPGs, however. ;) *sigh*... I really need some extra motivation to try to play this game again... :sigh:

I wish they would make a mmorpg for xbox like EQ: Online Adventures for PS2. I was so disappointed that MS canned True Fantasy Live Online. :( I'm not crazy about anime but it still looked like a lot of fun.

this game gives a rude awakening to long time gamers and a harsh kick in the ba11z to unsuspecting buyers of this game. when i played the first boss i was getting slaughtered left and right. couldnt beat the first boss for 3 days. it definitely challenges your gaming skills and forces you to improve your reflexes. one of the coolest things of this game is that the bosses dont progressively get harder, its totally and completely random. i mean i would fight the mini-bosses like the two fire worms in the caves and they were kicking my butt. but then i got the main boss of the level and i defeat him easily. what a nice reward that was lol. or how about the last boss, murai? he was a total pushover compared to the griffin or Alma the first time you fight her.

one thing that is for sure about this game, it takes patience and it is a game of precision. i have beaten the game 4 times now but the first time around was the most frustrating. i actually broke one of my controllers because of it lol. however, this is the best game i have ever played in such a long time aside from Halo.
