The DP didn't deter this murderer. What makes you think it will deter others?

How many school shooters have recieved the DP? Zero... That's why it keeps happening.

There probably is SOME deterrent value. It wasn't suggested that this would be a cure-all.

Let them decide what brings them closure. None of us can speak for them.
Well, some of us can report what the family members of murder victims often HAVE said, and all I did was pass that along.

Pretty sure we all know how serious this is.
Sure, but actions speak louder than a lot of wringing of hands on the part of judges and other public officials. So if it really brings the ultimate penalty, that is worth something.

If he's locked away for good, I don't see that being likely.
Considering that there are plenty of church and left-wing organizations working constantly to outlaw capital punishment, period; and a future Democrat government which, among other things, will try to stack the courts, is certainly probable...it's far from being unlikely.

What's different about this case is that the shooter didn't commit suicide like most mass murderers do out of regret and despair... He tried to escape and get away with it.

Maybe he'll only be sorry once they strap him to a gurney on his execution day?

Here is a video of Cruz being denied bail. Next should be his arraignment, where he will plead either guilty or not guilty. If he pleads guilty, there will be no trial, but that doesn't mean the judge cannot sentence him to death.

In this case, Cruz will be charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder, and fleeing the scene. This is exactly the type of case the DP was designed for.

Since 1976, the US has executed 1458 people. Almost 3000 people are presently on death row. It would appear that the death penalty is not a great deterrent.
Killing this guy will only make him one more person to add to the execution statistics. It will not stop the kind of horror that the US has experienced time and time again.
Mental health has been blamed, law enforcement agencies have been blamed, people have been blamed for not reporting their suspicions about someone, but the thing that people seem reluctant to blame is what I believe is the real problem. Guns. Having said that, I have no idea how it will be possible for America to rid itself of the addiction it has for guns. It could only do that if there was a will to do so, but unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be that will, and sad to say, I have no doubt that we will wake up to more of the same in the not too distant future.

Certainly, what would act as a deterrent on one person is not the same as what would affect the next person's decision-making, but if we are talking about the general situation, it is likely that having the death penalty is more of a deterrent than no death penalty.

The legal process leading to that costs millions, sometimes tens of millions.

Tens of millions..? I find that hard to believe. You know just as well as I do that judges and attorneys work 40 to 50 hr. Workweeks regardless of the case.

...You're discussing costs that will be paid regardless of if it's Nikolas Cruz or John Doe or whatever.. It costs the taxpayer zero extra dollars to execute Cruz.

I say lifetime of study to find out why, biological, mental, family history, family dynamics, everything.

Can dissection be a part of the study?

Your incredulity doesn’t change the cost of a capital prosecution and the appeals process that follows.

No, it costs them millions extra to execute him as that $83.00 injection can only happen at the end of the appeal process. If he signs onto a deal like him attorney is seeking those millions are not spent and he fades into obscurity.

I think you're missing the part where attorneys and legal staff will not be working extra hours for the prosecution and appeals processes. So the tens of millions of dollars will be spent, no doubt, either on this case or 14 other ones... It's money already spent, regardless -all that will happen is that other cases will be pushed back and delayed.

It took only 2 years and 2 months for Boston marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev ro recieve his death sentence (charged on April 22, 2013, and was sentenced to death on June 25, 2015).

Was he executed?

Your hand waving doesn’t change the cost of a capital case either. From the Florida bar:

Florida spends $51 million a year to impose and implement the death penalty, rather than sending convicted first-degree murderers to prison for life without parole. It is estimated that each execution costs taxpayers $24 million.
