I have been taking my 2 kids to salons for their haircuts lately. They're getting old enough that Mom's haircuts just don't cut it (ha ha) anymore. Last time I took them to Cost Cutters for their $10 Tuesdays. My son's hair had jagged edges and looked like something I could have done myself for free. So I decided to try a little more upscale salon today where the cuts go up to $12 for kids. The lady was really BAD. I came *this close* to picking my son up and leaving the place. She spoke about 2 sentences to him the whole time, and they were "sit up!" and "don't put your head like that!" She said nothing nice or friendly or reassuring to him. She kept gripping his shoulders and moving him from side to side. THEN she snipped her finger with the scissors AND CONTINUED TO CUT. She asked another lady to get her a bandaid. Meanwhile I'm frantically looking for blood. As her friend was puting her bandaid on for her I heard her say that she was not bleeding. SHEESH--don't you think she could have SAID SOMETHING TO ME? He had these big tufts of clipped hair sitting on his nose and cheeks and he was kinda panicky because he couldn't open his eyes or mouth. She mumbled something about "don't worry about it" and sauntered off to get a wet towel. meanwhile I was comforting him and brushing hair off his face.

Now I feel like a bad mom for puting him and me through this. At least
the girl gave him a nice cut--that is the positive thing that came of this. And she did say he was a good boy when it was all done. I will not go back there though, and I may write a letter. I should have said something perhaps while I was there :(

Well...Next time he's going with me to my stylist, I don't care what it costs.

Wow...sounds like you've had some bad experiences in the hair-cutting department. Would you believe I actually remember my first haircut? It was at this place specifically geared to kids. Sometime after that, I started hating haircuts. I had a holy horror of having short hair, and I remember crying in my room once for hours after getting a trim because I thought it was too short. :D

To Lucy:

Take the boy to an old-fashioned BARBER. Not a "stylist," but a BARBER. Get him a no-nonsense BOY cut.

I remember one time my husband took our son to get a haircut. The stylist said, "Would you like me to cut his hair in a *mushroom*?"

My husband said, "My son is not a vegetable. Just cut his hair."

Peace,

Hang in there, eventually you will stumble across someone one who does a good job of cutting hair and then you can keep going back to that person.

We found someone we like and I will not allow anyone else to cut my hair now. In the old days people always stuck with the same person, so they had to be good to get people to come back again.

Hahahahaha!  Great answer!

Lucy, that really does sound like a nightmare.  But don't feel like a bad mom.  You were doing your best and what happened wasn't your fault, but the cutter's.  Next time will be better--couldn't get any worse! :sigh:
