  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes folks, believe it or not its time to start talking about the 2013 NFL season! The schedule has just been released, the draft is only a week away, trades and contracts are being negotiated, so let's talk football! Ok, so maybe this is also a thread for those of us experiencing football withdrawls as well... ;)

How do you feel about your teams first pick? Agree? Disagree? Scratching your head?

In my case, my Giants picked up an athletic lineman to help shore up their ageing veterans, and while he will probably be very good inside, his slightly short arm span will negate any ability if they put him on the outside. All in all, a B- pick.

Cowboys camp is up and running. Or, at least, it was until everybody except the water boy got injured.

Geesh. Can we catch even a small break?

Nope! It appears your cowboys are going to start choking BEFORE this season starts. Kind of get a jump on things! Lol! J/k! ;)

Well, while I don't think I would call a rash of injuries choking, it certainly picks things up where we ended last season. Such a downer too. This team is loaded. And yes, I am being serious (unless we're talking O-line, that is) when I say that. LOADED.

We are the Ferrari that stays perpetually in the shop, so to speak.

You're a Giants fan? NO WAY! I almost couldn't tell.

Almost.

My QB is better than yours. Fact.

But I digress.....

Injuries are what killed this team last year. You can't deny that with a straight face. And it looks like we're starting out that way again in 2013. That's a shame for any team, imo. Nobody wants to play against second stringers. Injuries are bad for you and your opponent. Especially when you get to your division championship two years in a row limping with second and third stringers. It sounds like an excuse but it's not, it's just reality.

We'll see. Still a long way off from meaningful snaps.

2 rings and way more playoff wins say otherwise. ;)

Yeah my Giants were plagued by the injury bug too. Basically the Redskins won the division by default. We'll see what happens this year though!

Yeah, that's a cop out. Everybody wants to bring up the team aspect of the game when judging Romo as an individual. But when I start bringing up individual stats, nobody wants to hear it. Least of all Eli. Because he knows Romo is a better QB than he is.

But hey, I've always said I'd rather be lucky than good any day of the week. And your boy certainly has that covered. That's not a slight either. Just like injuries, it's reality.

Well, stats are one thing(and they tend to place things in a vaccuum), but you can't deny the intangibles, and Eli has them in spades. Romo just can't get it done when he needs to. You can be great for the first 16 weeks, but it all boils down to can you do what it takes when the game or the season is on the line. As it stands right now, Romo doesn't have it. Trust me, I'm a 20+ year Giants fan, so I know all about the ups and downs. We'll have to see what this season holds.

Have what? See, that's what I'm getting at. You can't say what it is that Romo is lacking. Was he lacking an extra set of hands when Patrick Crayton watched (Romo put it right on him, btw. Check the replay.) the go ahead score sail by him against your G-men in 2008? Was he lacking sunglasses for Miles Austin when he "lost in the lights" what would have been the game-winner against NY? What was he lacking when Roy Williams had the game-winner snatched (literally!) out of his hands at the goal line against New Orleans? Of course, we all know he was "missing" two healthy ribs against Washington at the end of last year, so I hardly see how you hold that against him. And oh yeah, that was after he had already played with a collapsed lung. But hey, who's counting internal injuries and hemorrhaging when the other team can just throw up a prayer and have it pinned to their guy's helmet.

Romo isn't lacking anything other than decent (not even GOOD, just decent) O-line play and a defense that can hold a lead. I bet you wouldn't even wanna hazard a guess as to which QB had the most 4th qtr comebacks last year, would ya?

And while we're talking playoff wins, that stat everyone likes to trot out about Dallas only having one of them in the last 2 decades or whatever it is. Guess which team in the entire history of the NFL has the most playoff wins? Don't bother, you already know. And imagine that, with even giving storied franchises like New York and Chicago and Green Bay and Pittsburgh almost 20 YEARS to catch up, you still have less playoff victories than Big D. Talk about not "having it".

Not being malicious, just truthful. Believe me, I've been a Dallas Cowboy all my life (some 40yrs.) and I've never seen it quite like this. It's like people don't even watch the games any more. Not saying you specifically but football fans these days seemingly get all their intellect from ESPN by-lines. That's the really sad part, imo.

What I mean by "it" are those intangibles you can't describe. Take your Miles Austin example. The ball was out of normal reach. Had Austin dove he might've caught it. (Of course we'll never know) But then you take that toss to Manningham on the sideline in the superbowl. Manning had a 1 foot by 1 foot window, and he dropped it in perfectly. Trust me, I lived through Manning's first couple of seasons where I wanted to pull my hair out, but he's gotten better, and has carried that offense on his back for entire seasons while they waited for the running game to decide if it was going to show up. I won't say Romo isnt a good quaterback, he just doesn't seem to have what it takes when the game is in his hands.

Revisionist history is strong with this one, Obi-Wan.

LOL.

The ball was right where it was supposed to be. It's called a timing route. Austin beat his guy by three steps and was wide open. All he had to do was put his hands under the ball. Austin even admitted that he blew it. Not that he had to, the whole world saw it.

Well, so far the Giants look like they're picking up right where they left off last year...flashes of brilliance on defense, but overall not getting it done, special teams is average, and the offense couldn't score if you blindfolded everyone in the stadium....
