Highspeed internet isnt available in my are. I am currently at my sisters house in another state. Her dsl is due to be turned on on 11/30/06. The isp wanted to rent to us a wireless router for an additional $8/mo Or a router for $5/mo, or we could purchase it for $99. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=2470291

I dont normaly buy cheap products, but i knew walmart had this wireless router for $40 so i told the isp i would supply my own router.

So my question is, when the dsl is finaly connected via my isp, can i just connect this router to my phone line and have wireless internet?(install software etc..) Or do i need the router from my isp as well? I can still take back this router is need be.

My sisters pc is older and doesnt have a lan port, nor does she dl any large programs so she just got the 256k. She does have a pci wirless card installed that was working.

Thank you pgp
I was lying in bed thinking about what to do, it was then that i realised i forgot there was a modem involved. If i buy a lan card for my sisters pc, can i hook directly to the modem? or do i still need a router?

I have also seen routers, or were they modems that have a usb port on them that i can use instead of the lan cable or the wireless card.

I wouldn't recommend using USB for networking. Although it works pretty fine, it requires additional drivers and USB is just not made for networking but for peripherals (printer, scanner, camera, etc.). Ethernet was made for networking and is still the best way to make an easy network.

I think pgp_protector forgot one step in his schema, which is the switch/hub if there are several computers to be connected to the Internet through the same modem. Most routers have several ports and work as switches, but some don't and still require the use of a standalone switch.

In some cases, the DSL modem can also a be a router, which is the case with mine. If you just separate all components, you get :

( Internet ) ------| DSL modem ----- router ----- switch/hub ---- computers

The switch allows all the computers to be on the same LAN. The LAN is connected to the router via the switch, so the router can deal with the traffic and redirect the streams to that right machines in the LAN. Finally, the router is connected to the DSL modem to send and receive datas over the Internet through the phone line.

If you only have one computer, you can plug it directly to the DSL modem though. The system just gets a bit more complicate with more than one computer.

The one he linked to (at walmart) is a router/hub ;)

If you only have one PC, just the modem should be fine. If there are multiple computers involved, you'll probably need a router. If there are laptops involved, the wireless would be a nice enhancement to the environment, but not required. You'll probably need a ethernet card for the PC, to be sure, but those generally aren't too pricey or hard to install.

Thank you all for your posts, they were very helpful. We will only be using one pc at a time. i will only be at my sisters house for a few weeks, so i dont mind switching cords to use differnt pc's and we are sharing a monitor anyway atm.

I have in the past tried 2 different lan card on her pc (it used to be my friends old pc) Even with the software it was difficult to get the mobo to read and utilize the lan cardsThat is why i am hopeing to beable to utilize the usb for internet.. Her pc is only a pentium 2, slot 2 450mhz with 512 ram... About from the year 2000. But with video card and hd upgraded it works fine for her. The mobo is some old odd intell board.

So just the modem that comes from the isp will be fine,If not ill go buy a lan card, though i have 2 lan cards a at home, i am out of state atm. thanks again for your help.
