New Testament Sabbath

You just said yourself that the Sabbath is pointless if people do it only for salvation, and not for simply loving God. If you believe that the Sabbath isn't neccessary for salvation, why does it have to be just Saturday?

In short, because He is God. He makes the rules. The Sabbath reveals who our God is. It is He who is the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth. Since He is the Creator, He can make the rules to follow.

Remember, 'the sabbath was made for man'

When was the Sabbath 'made', at Mt. Sinai?, no indeed, it was 'made' at Creation. Who was the 'man' at Creation? It was Adam, and all in him. As it was made 'for' him, 'sanctified' for him.

Yes, indeed, worship God 24/7, with your whole heart:

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. - Matthew 22:37

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this [is] the first commandment. - Mark 12:30

And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. - Luke 10:27

Even worship and pray to God every day, in any moment:

Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice. - Psalms 55:17

Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments. - Psalms 119:164

Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. - Daniel 6:10

Pray without ceasing. - 1 Thessalonains 5:17

Even in the belly of a great fish:

And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, [and] thou heardest my voice. - Jonah 2:2

Yet, the 7th Day Sabbath of the 4th Commandment requires Rest from Labour and is also called an "holy convocation" (sacred gathering; Leviticus 23:3).

Remember, Jesus is our example:

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. - Luke 4:16 (compare to Acts 17:2)

Remember Jesus did not sin, and asked us to 'go and sin no more' (John 8:11).

What does John say about 'love of God':

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. - 1 John 5:2

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. - 1 John 5:3

The Sabbath is called a 'delight', not 'grievous':

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, [from] doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking [thine own] words: - Isaiah 58:13

Look at the very first words of the Ten Commandments, are they engendering bondage or freedom?

I [am] the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. - Exodus 20:2

That is grace.

Then He says:

And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. - Exodus 20:6

If ye love me, keep my commandments. - John 14:15

Christ Jesus loves you and is calling you into His marvelous freedom from sin. Nine commandments is upheld by most of the Chrtistian world, why not then embrace the whole? Won't you accept?

Husky what are you trying to get at? If you understood what I said before, you wouldn't need to ask this question.

Allow me to quote myself "In the 4th commandment, God isn't limiting worship to one day." God isn't saying only worship him on Saturday. We are free to worship God whenever we please in the time we are given. The 4th commandment says that 6 days are for us to do what we have to and the 7th is his. If on one of the 6 days you want to spend time with God thats fine. All God is asking, is that we not forget the weekly appointment he has set up. You can have weekday appointments if you like, no problem.

Yes, but this is exactly why I asked the question I did. I understand what your point is, I get it. However, why are we required to keep this specific day, when it's not required for salvation. By honoring the Sabbath with all it's restrictions, aren't we reinstating ourselves under the old law of Moses? Why was Christ needed if we keep putting ourselves under the same law which he came to liberate us from?

Perhaps you might rethink what Christ Jesus came to do. He came to save people from their sins (Matthew 1:21), and sin is the transgression of the law (1 John 3:4). He specifically said He came not to abolish the Law:

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am notcome to destroy , but to fulfil. - Matthew 5:17

Does fulfil mean to 'abolish' to 'do away with' or to instead to 'keep' to the fullest, to 'fill up to the greatest measure'? How then was it to be fulfilled?

Christ Jesus also said He came to fulfill all righteousnes:

And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer [it to be so] now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. - Matthew 3:15

What then of righteousness?

Christ wants us to have the law fulfilled even in us:

That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. - Romans 8:4

Remember, the Ten Commandments are 'spiritual' (Romans 7:14). The commandments encompass everything one may do, they are exceeding broad:

I have seen an end of all perfection: [but] thy commandment [is] exceeding broad . - Psalms 119:96

Scripture fortells what Jesus would do:

The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make [it] honourable. - Isaiah 42:21

Do not think that the Sabbath is about restrictions, think about it as freedom in Christ Jesus, obedience in love, to have a whole day with Him and in fellowship with others.

The Old Covenant was not the Ten Commandments, the Old Covenant was an agreement between the people and God found in Exodus 19 and 24. They had agreed to do (by their own power, without any help from the Lord) all that the Lord has said. Yet they had not even heard it yet, and when they finally heard that which they were to do, they within days broke all of the Commandments laid before them. Did God then say it was too hard for them, too restricting that it had to be made easier? No, He told Moses to get another set of tablets to be written on again. Two times for a witness. The Jews were to be a 'light to the world' and to take it to everyone, yet they failed to do so.

Christ Jesus came to save us from sin, and sin is the transgression of the Law. He came to save us from attempting to save ourselves which we could not. The Law was not given to save anyone. Anyone attempting to save themselves by any law, or by any other means than that which has been provided by God is attempting an impossibility.

To love God and to keep His Commandments is not attepting to save oneself, it is in perfect obedience to the will of God.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven. - Matthew 6:10

I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law [is] within my heart. - Psalms 40:8

What does the New Covenant state? Did not God say that He would write His Law in our hearts, and not we ourselves?

God had found fault with 'them' (not the Ten Commandments, which are 'Perfect, Holy, just and Good', and even 'forever and ever', but rather he found fault with the peoples (Israel's) agreement and their failure to keep their promise), so God in the New Covenant makes 'better promises' that 'He' would write and He would do, for He is the 'Author and Finisher of our faith.' See Jeremiah 31:31,33 and Hebrews 8:8,10, 10:16.

What is wrong with the Ten Commandments that they are not perfect? Why do they need changing, or is it instead 'we' that need changing to obey Him in them?

If ye love me, keep my commandments. - John 14:15

Shall we not love Him who first loved us and died in our stead, because of our transgression against His Law?

If a police officer pulls you over for speeding, and is ready to haul you in, for you had broken the law, places you in the back of his squadcar, and a sentence now looms over you for the law you broke, but he decides to have mercy and lets you go (an imperfect scenario), are you not now under 'grace' and not 'under law' and 'condemnation'? Are you now free to transgress the Law over and over again in spite of the Grace given? Shall we as Christians not be more careful to obey than anyone because we have been shown grace?

Christ Jesus says, 'Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.' - Matthew 11:28

Is this rest, not rest from sin? Have we not been shown what sin is? Does not Paul also say how he knew what sin was?

Yes, but this is exactly why I asked the question I did. I understand what your point is, I get it. However, why are we required to keep this specific day, when it's not required for salvation.

None of our works is what is going to save us. So then does that mean I can kill or steal since abstaining for it won't save me anyway?

By honoring the Sabbath with all it's restrictions, aren't we reinstating ourselves under the old law of Moses?

The Sabbath predates Moses. Many folks argue that there was no command to keep the Sabbath before the Children of Israel in the wilderness. There really weren't much recorded commands anywhere before that point. When the bible says in Genesis that Abraham kept the Lord's commandments and statutes, it does not list what those were. Noah was told to let the clean animals go into the ark by sevens and the unclean by twos, but it isn't recorded where God told Noah or anyone else how to distinguish between clean and unclean. It isn't recorded anywhere, where God told Cain and Abel or anyone else that they were suppose to sacrifice a lamb. So to assume that because there is no recorded command about something, that means no command was given is dead wrong. But pay attention what I am about to show you. You know of the experience the Israelites had when they had no food and God rained down manna to feed them. Every day they were to gather as much as they needed, except on the 6th day in which they were suppose to gather a double portion. Now look at what God says in response to those who were disobedient and went out on the Sabbath looking for manna.

Exo 16:27 And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.
Exo 16:28 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?

God uses the phrase, "How long". This suggests to us that they have been breaking God's commandments for a long time. However verse 27 suggests that this specific violation of going out for manna on the Sabbath was not a habitual thing. It says to us that even before this manner experience, God had his laws and commandments which the people were not obeying. Were those the same laws and commandments he gave to Abraham which were not listed? Why not. This question is, why would God create the Sabbath at creation, bless and sanctify the 7th day and make it apart of the week so that it will be a recurring thing, if it was really for the Jews some 2000 years after creation. So God set aside a particular day, and for 2000 years paid no attention to it and told no one about it, until Israel came along? And then when Jesus came along the Sabbath is no longer necessary? Then in Isaiah 66 God is saying that every Sabbath all flesh will come down to worship him? Why is God being so inconsistent, or is he?

The Sabbath was apart of God's 10 commandments which were different and separated from the additional laws that Moses wrote. I can provide scriptural reference if you so desire. Keeping the Sabbath therefore is not obedience to the law of Moses but to the law of God.

Why was Christ needed if we keep putting ourselves under the same law which he came to liberate us from?

Christ's purpose on earth was to save us from our sins and not the law. The law isn't doing anything to us, it is sin that is our problem. Jesus' plan is to combat sin and not the law. If Jesus came to liberate us from the law, then why in the New Covenant would be place the law in our hearts?

Consider this. Hebrews 8 - 10 are the only chapters in the entire New Testament which describes the differences between the Old and New Covenant. Why is it, that the differences pointed out have close to nothing to do with the law. The main emphasis is about the earthly priesthood and sanctuary, sacrifices and ordinances and feasts. There are only 2 references made to the law and they are different from each other.

Sin is also lawlessness, according to I John 3:4. Lawlessness brings in anarchy. The "man of lawlessness" to be revealed is the Antichrist. As Christians, we need God's law. We also tend to forget who Jesus really is. His finger wrote the names in the sand, touched blind eyes and gave sight, touched ears and gave hearing. It was also His finger that wrote those Ten Commandments on the stone tablets. Col. 1:15 & 16 says "By Him (Christ) all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, etc."

No matter what we are not under the ceremonial days and sabbaths given to Israel. The explanation of the Sabbath command is given in Exodus 31 and is quite specific.

The Sabbath

12 Then the LORD said to Moses, 13 “Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy.

14 “‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people. 15 For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death. 16 The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. 17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’” 18 When the LORD finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.

I don't know about you, but I'm not in the ancient nation of Israel.

Quote, "The explanation of the Sabbath command is given in Exodus 31 and is quite specific."

And the explanation of the Sabbath and its command is given in four Gospels and is quite specific, especially as far as which day of the week it is. Read Matthew 28:1; but read it in an English Bible of before the 20th century because the Sundaydarians dared to steal it away from The Seventh Day Sabbath of the LORD GOD in the more recent translations.

If you were of the Israel of God, the Israel The LORD is GOD of and the Israel the LORD GOD made "everlasting covenant" with, and the Sabbath of the LORD GOD is sign of that He is the One Who makes you holy, the Sabbath of the LORD GOD would have been for you too.

But it seems you cut yourself off from the People of God as you have cut yourself off obviously from the Sabbath of the LORD GOD. What connectedness do you retain with the LORD GOD if there is no sign that He is the LORD GOD WHO makes you holy? How do you answer that, to yourself?

You know technically, the Hebrew day began at night and ended in the afternoon. If we look at Sunday as day one of creation and Saturday as day seven of creation, day one would have began at night, and ended the next afternoon, which would be our equivalent of Monday afternoon.

Follow this pattern all the way to Saturday the sabbath, the day begins Saturday night, and ends Sunday afternoon. Technically, Sunday morning church and Saturday night church WOULD be the Sabbath. Our Western thinking places Saturday as the Sabbath when in actuality the Sabbath would be a mix of Saturday night and Sunday morning.

However, let's look at Mark 2: 23-28

23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”

27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Essentially, Jesus is forcing the Pharisees to choose between David, a great king of Israel and a man after God's own heart who openly broke the laws of the Sabbath by eating this ritual food, and their laws, which they interpreted as keeping the Sabbath holy as a day of rest without any exception. Jesus was saying, look, the Sabbath was meant to be a day for you relax and worship God. Instead, you treat it as binding, and constricting, wringing out the entire purpose of a day of rest.

I've actually heard that, in ancient Hebrew times, they would divide up their land into seven parts. Six parts would be cultivated each year for food, while the seventh part would be left alone to rest for that year. So every year that came, they would alternate between the divided parts to equally give the land a chance to rest.

Why can't we as Christians take this viewpoint? Who cares if I worship Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, or Saturday? As long as I'm setting aside time for God, can you really rag on me for that? Just saying...

Is this intended to be an answer to my post just above?

If yes, in what way do you answer on anything in my post?

By the way, How could David break the "Sabbath-Law" by having eaten of the Shewbread?

Instead, David as type of Jesus Christ, HONOURED THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THAT SABBATH DAY'S OFFERING the Shewbread, and thus honoured the Holy Day of the LORD which ALSO was and still is a shadow-type of Christ!

But you say David broke the Sabbath!?

Eish....

Verse 21 reveals quite a bit. Where did Saul/Paul go looking for Christians in the first place? For where did he ask letters to?

The context is about salvation, and the manner of it:

And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, [and said], Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. - Acts 15:1

But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command [them] to keep the law of Moses. - Acts 15:5

Notice it says the 'law of moses'. Yet, let us say for the moment that this includes the Ten Commandments. This does not negate the Keeping of them, it merely says that no one is saved by them, for we are saved by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul spent a great deal of his epistles explaining the function of the Law of God.

What shall we sin in the face of grace?

The problems in the Acts 15 council were very specific.

Look also at the things specifically required, they are all Old Testament commandments. It was only an immediate listing for gentiles to follow (by which they shall do well), not the end all be all, for they would continue to go to the gathering, synagogue to learn more about God and His Law on the 7th Day Sabbath.

Luke is very explicit in Luke and Acts on this. Compare Luke 4:16 to Acts 17:2 to begin with.
So who then are the people identified in verse 24 who had no authority and what were they doing? Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

So what does it mean to subvert? To destroy completely; RUIN, To undermine the character, morals, or allegiance of, to over throw compeletly. Doesn't tha describe what those without authority were trying to do? furthermore doesn't that describe what some here are doing?

We see in Acts 16, 17, 18 Paul preached on the sabbath. Acts 18:4 he preached to both the Jews and the gentiles.

Acts 13
42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

Paul evangelized the gentiles on the sabbath. He didn't invite the gentile to come on Sunday. He didn't go to their pagan temple on Sunday. "And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God."

Here the disciples kept the sabbath after Jesus' crucifixion.

Luke 23
54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

Rev 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Matthew 19
16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
What do you expect from Jews? Paul evangelized the Jew first. See Romans 1:16. The Gentiles are incidental to that. IOW Paul didn't go to the Gentiles first.

The His commandments of Rev 22:14 needs to be defined. Remember it is the same John that wrote a Gospel with this verse If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

He also wrote this - And this is His (God the Father) commandment, That we should believe on the name of His (God the Father's) Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He (Jesus) gave us commandment.

Because God didn't bless and sanctify any other day. In the 4th commandments he asked us to remember the Sabbath day.

I always use the example of Cain and Abel. They both made sacrifices, Cain was a farmer and Abel was a shepherd. It was more CONVENIENT for Cain to offer the best of his fruits. But that is not what God wanted. Abel gave to God what he wanted and his sacrifice was accepted.

Mark 7:7 tells us that there are folks who are worshiping God in vain because they follow the commandments and traditions of men while casting aside the commandments of God. So even if it is not a requirement for salvation, does this mean we don't give God what he wants? A loving heart will strive to please God and follow his instructions as best as he can.

In the 4th commandments, God isn't limiting worship to one day. He is making a weekly appointment with us to have us rest and forget our business and spend time with him and in doing his work. The Sabbath is God's day and not our day. Therefore we can't suddenly decide which day should be the Sabbath. That is not our decision to make. The one who made all the days, designated one day in the week for full communion with his people. That is how it is.
For me it comes down to covenants. The covenant made with the COI was never given to the Gentiles. This includes the sabbath. Yes I know about Mk 2:27 the oft quoted proof text.

I think he understood the demand to worship on the sabbath the only day of acceptable worship. To which I also don't concur.

Then what is the brew haw about the sabbath, if day of worship doesn't matter?

Do you enjoy confusing things of purpose? In your previous post you made a reference to the Sabbath and implied or stated that someone was saying it was the only day of acceptable worship. Well I do not agree with that. And no one has really said anything of that sort. Husky understands this and you are in no position to speak for him.

It is the standard SDA stament. If one argues like and SDA to me they also imply that they are. It doesn't matter if a poster is displaying a different faith icon or not. Several admit to being SDA and refuse to use that icon for reason/cause. I call it fraud a direct violation of #9. I didn't say that they aren't or can't be a Christian. I wonder why they don't have enough pride in the movement to be identified with it? If they don't wish to be so identified why be part of it? Doesn't it show there is a problem? What is the problem? Why one doesn't want to be identified with their theology while espousing it is rather odd to me.
