  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I am trying to get into better shape, but finding it hard going. I am 40 years old and haven't really been doing much for the last year to stay in shape. I started trying to walk/run this last Saturday and have gone three times so far. It is pitiful how little I can run. I get winded halfway around the block!!!! That was shocking and embarrasing to even write down. Having said that, I am only about 20 pounds or so overweight. I have thougth about trying Pilates or something like that, but I just can't see me doing that.

I guess I'm looking for any advise or encouragement. I am Type II diabetic, so part of the reason I am doing this is to get my blood sugar numbers down, which it seems to be doing a good job of.
:help:

What kind of running do you do? Low intensity aerobics? Try intervals instead. Also not forgetting corrective exercise before training.
I walk around the block near my house and run for a while also. I can't go for long. I have tried aerobics before, but it has been years. I hated doing that.
What do you mean by "corrective exercise"?

Heya guess your muscles are not used to being used that's all. Is it convenient for you to go swim laps? If so I think that might b a good plcae to start if you haven't been exercising for awhile.

Otherwise it's all about gradual increments...so maybe instead of distances start with joggin at ure own pace, constantly without stoppin for about 15mins every day. Then keep increasing it by 5minutes every 4 to 5 days till you can comfortably jog for about 40 minutes. Then you could try seeing how far your actually runnin (jus try it on a treadmill once) or somethin like that, n work your way up from the distance, it'll prob be around 5km.

That's what I did n it pretty much worked haah :D

Corrective exercise include myofascial release, stretching, mobilisation, activation.

It is good that you hate aerobics. Aerobics is bad for your heart health so don't do it.

When I graduated from highschool, I celebrated, because no one would ever force me to run ever again. Low and behold, 8 years later, I run of my own volition and love it. Why?

1. The C25k program. It's a run/walk program that takes you up to running 30 minutes over a 9 week period. I've known dozens, maybe hundreds of people who've gone from couch potato to life long runner through this program.

2. John Bingham. His books and articles taught me that it's ok to be slow. It's ok to be the last one in a race. Just the fact that I get off the couch and run (or waddle as the case may be ^_^ ) and I love it makes me a runner.

I too am in the same boat jsimms. I JUST started exercising, eating right and focusing on my body health in general.

I'm in my 2nd week but taking those 1st steps is critical and I cannot do it without our Lord. He is my strength right now and I trust in His every word. When I didn't feel like waking up at 5am because I was tired or lazy, I prayed, asked God what He wants of me and He usually tells me the same thing, to be healthy and fit in order to serve Him better. Trying to argue with God is pretty pointless so I run. Yes, at first it was painful, but then I think nothing I do can be more painful than being nailed to a cross and it then seems really petty. Take it slow, do this at your OWN pace, not the way the marathon runners that pass you by do it. Remember, they were beginners once too. I tell myself every morning when I'm running that I want to be better than this, that I want to be a runner. Encourage youself a LOT. Praise God with a healthy body!
I just bought my first dumb bell set I've ever owned and I cannot WAIT to go home and try it. Trust me, it's been a rough 2-week start but I've ALREADY seen weight loss and results!!!!!! 2-weeks! I now say to myself, "What else can I do? How much more can I lose?" Don't give up, even when you've slipped. I slipped ONCE so far and beat myself up, then realized it was over too much cheese on a trisket with tuna and laughed. I used to eat whole pizzas, carne asada fries with guacamole and sour cream, $6.00 burgers from Carl's Jr w/fries, pretty much poison. I did this daily and now I'm tripping on a little cheese on my cracker?! It was funny and the very next day I got back on the street and ran. I plan on living life this way because God wants me to be healthy.

I've now gone about 6 times. I'm having trouble with my blood sugar dropping too much while I am running. I guess I will have to eat a snack before I go each time. I am dropping between 50-100 points for 30 minutes of exercise. 15 of those minutes I am running and 15 walking.
