I agree with you Kilted Stranger, however, I have been a little concerned that since I've already heard THE phantom sing the part, that it might make the movie less enjoyable not necessarily because he's a worse singer, but because I'm used to the other. Did it seem a great shock to you when Gerard Butler started singing, like was it really distracting from the movie? I've heard a few clips and his voice sounds a lot lower then Micheal Crawfords. I'm not predudice against him singing the part or anything, but having already heard it sung so many times by Micheal Crawford, it seems like Butler's voice would distract somewhat from the film and the original ALW story.It's not really fair just to write the actor who plays the Phantom off just because he isnt Crawford. That would put quite a few Broadway and West End stars out of a job.
