  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Okay, here's the deal.  :)

I run Windows 98 and I have the latest IE (6.02).

I was having a problem playing games on sites like Yahoo games because apparantly I didn't have "Microsoft Virtual Machine."  So after fighting with Windows Support, which absolutely refused to provide a link or any way for me to download that I found another way to get it...I downloaded and installed....reboot my computer.

Now I am trying to download further security updates from Windows Update, and the download thing just freezes.

And what's even more annoying is that I can't get pop-up windows to work right.  I don't mean those annoying pop-up ads.  What I mean is, www.yahoo.com.  That's a link to Yahoo.  Before I would be able to click on that link, and it would open Yahoo in a new window.  But now it opens the window but kinda just sits there like it's trying to load something...only it's not.  I actually have to stop the browser from loading and then refresh the page to get to where I was heading for.

Unfortunately when windows open up like that for various games, I don't have that ability so I can't even play games that start up in new windows.

Anyone have any tips on what I can do to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Where did you download the Microsoft virtual machine from? Also, have you ever had any viruses on your computer - I ask this because there is a fairly common hoax atm that makes you think you are removing a virus file, but are in fact damaging the Java part of IE.

If the VM was from a legit source, and you haven't been caught by this virus hoax, you could try reverting back to your previous version of IE.

Microsoft software will always crash. There is nothing you can do about it generally.

The amount of time you've spent on this problem leads me to one simple solution: install another browser. There is no reason to use IE, and in fact you have plenty of reasons not to use IE.

Go to www.google.com and search for one of the following browsers.

Mozilla (This has all the features of IE and is free.)
Opera (This is also fully functional, but unless you pay to register you must view ads.)
BrowseX (Free, small download, fast, simple, but few features.)
Netscape (You've probably used this somewhere. Like IE, but better.)

There are scores of others. There's really no reason to bother with Micro$oft IE when there are better, free alternatives. You could even use IE for 'regular' browsing, and your new browser just for these troublesome sites.

What's kinda dumb is that I've had no problems with IE until just recently when all of a sudden it was telling me I didn't have Microsoft VM installed and I needed it...but it absolutely refused to allow me to install it. RAR!

So I'm using Mozilla right now...doesn't make me too happy because I can't see the glowing effects on stuff here and it kinda slows down my entire computer. But at least I can view pop-ups and 2nd windows and stuff again.

Thanks for the tips everyone! :)

Don't give up yet!! What's life without a few challenges? ;)

Was the IE an "upgrade"? Did it come on a disk or did you download it from microsoft? I have experienced something very similar in the past when trying to upgrade IE (I think I was going from 5.0 to 5.1) anyhoo, I ended up having to reload my windows. Sounds like you have nothing to lose. Go to your add/remove app in settings and get rid of IE. Pop your disk in and reload win98. If you feel real gutsy, try downloading the upgrade again and see what happens. Our buddy Bill Gates is counting on you.

nah - Don't bother reinstalling win 98 - I would download Opera - It's faster than Ie, Mozilla and all the other browsers - plus it has hardly any bugs.

But if you really want to stick with IE, Download IE SP 1

I would give you links to where you can download them - But I don't have 15 posts yet :(

Microsoft are always making things worse with their "patches".

My advice, get Win2k! it's about 100 times more stable due to it being based on windows NT not the win 95-98-ME string of OS's which progressively got worse as the version number increased! lol.
WinXP, is about as good a 2k, but 2k is less GUI intensive, and therefore is faster...
and the OS does infact have an effect on the IE performance, and vice-versa, as IE is a shell!

I dunno how to solve your problems without more info...
Can u get me the IE installation error log? i dunno where is is on win98, but have a look in the windows dir, and the internet explorer installation dir, and see what you can see. u are looking for a .log file.
