I've been reading through some of these posts and I have to say that your stories all sound so familiar. I am an alcoholic. I don't drink daily, but I binge drink when I drink. The last time was last night. I have made a commitment to quit. I am positive that with prayer and God's strength I will be able to. However, I am very excited to have found this place. A place where I can openly discuss my struggle with people who pray and also struggle with my same addiciton. I also hope that I can be there to support each of you in your fight against drinking, and I will keep you in my prayers.

Welcome to the thread. We hope to hear from you often, good news or bad. (We all had enough bad news in our day that yours is not going to bring us down.) I'll suggest at the outset that you also take a look at A. A.; and check out what counselling and treatment facilities are in your area. I'm not, at this time, suggesting that you commit to any of them other than A.A., your local phone book will probably give you an idea what's nearby.
An important thing to remember is that you don't have to do this alone. In fact, you're a lot more likely to succeed with others than without. Whether it's here, at an AA meeting or in counselling, you're not going to surprise or disappoint us with anything you've done or that's happened to you in your drinking years. You name it, we've done it.
Most important, remember that you have a Power greater than yourself who can restore you to sanity. A very patient and forgiving one, I might add. So good luck, God Bless, and (as we say in AA) "Keep coming back!"

I agree with what Bill said, and would like to add how important it is especially in the begining to be around supportive people who understand addiction. There are many tools to learn for future sobriety, this takes time.

Once a drinking pattern has established ( everyday, or binge), the desire to drink has become a need with the subconscious, survival part of our brain. This is why it can not be done by the conscious (willpower) part of the brain most of the time.

Until we set a new pattern we need support, and once the drug/drink is used again even years after abstanace the brain has not forgotten how much it likes it, and will be like we never stopped.

Accountability with others, and working on what got us to drink/use in the first place will help with the deep desires of wanting to go back and do what the brain feels helped in the past. This is called relapse.

God is so good, He does not require that we get sober and stay sober alone. He gave us AA, which allows me to get a lot of help, from a lot of lovely people who understand alcoholism and how to get and stay sober in a fellowship of people who definitely empathize.
