I thought the Armor of God was a different thing entirely being that it existed prior to the characters.

Yep, that worked, also took away all the little "Armor of God" icons on the right side of posts (which I didn't mind seeing - like I said, I didn't think the features were linked).... ohwell.

I don't want to read 30 pages of posts... but has it been mentioned here yet that 1) threads load realllllly slowly now because of the characters, and 2) "special" items are piling up on top of each other behind the character? (For example, I have two ribbons, but they are right on top of each other so only one is visible.)

I see both of these issues as a problem, but because of the slowness of page loads, I'm probably going to end up turning off armor altogether - which I think is a real shame, because I like to see how people dressed themselves up.
