Hello all. I have a problem with depression. All my troubles may start with the fact that I was a Atheist. I have many thoughts of killing myself and its hard for me to read the bible. Sometimes it feels just like a book that I would buy from a drama section. I pray but it seems that devil attacks me more. Someone told me to stop feeling sorry for myself. I try but I keep harking on all the mistakes that I have made. Everyone calls me for they problems and I listen to give advice. But I can not follow my own advice. Hypocritical huh? :<( I can not stand the voices and the constant feel of guilt. Please someone talk to me. I have tried to soak a little in at a time but its so hard right now. Concentration level is very minimum. Thank you and God Bless.

Hi needstobesaved, welcome, first of all, Jesus wants you to be at peace. You can give everything to him. He doesn't lay the guilt trip on you like the devil, he calls people to come after him and he encourages them to go forward. I would cast all thoughts of killinging oneself out by telling yourself you won't touch the issues of life and death, that is not an option, then the temptation for that will go because you've made a commitment not to go near those issues. Life and death belong to God, period. Now you have to get through life the best you can, know Jesus is such a positive, he gives the heart so many beautiful gifts such as hope ,peace , joy , love, say the name of Jesus during the day. Powerful is his name, say short prayers to Jesus, Jesus, help me, Jesus I trust in you, etc. those will help especially when feeling you are haveing a hard time concentrating on God, short little prayers will be a powerful aid. Keep trying to read the bible and getting to know Jesus better maybe alittle at a time. Jesus wants you to cast all your cares onto him, whatever bothers you give it to him and ask him to help you. Ask Jesus to take away any evil manifestations in your life, evil spirits can speak to people but its not common but can happen. Ask the Lord to silence all evil and to remove it from your life and be sure not to have anything around that would invite evil in like occult stuff. Looking at a crucifix is powerful, make sure you have one in your dwelling place. If the voices persist the Lords does not want you to rule out seeking help from the medical community and I would suggest go to a church and talk to a pastor or a priest. Get the ministers of God invovled in your walk with the Lord. Remember, Jesus would never say anything to cast you down but would uplift you in his great love for you. All he ask is we try to go forward to his Kingdom, some people might be inching along but as long as its in the right direction they will be blessed. God bless. This is a place for you to share anytime.

Great job! :amen:

Now to the precious one that God created that needs peace, giving advise to your friends is a display of love. Love is in your life already in many other forms. This emotions that pull you apart aren't who you are meant to be. I believe you know and desire to be complete. Our emotions can distinguish what is love and what is not. But don't let it sit there....Find God who will give you peace, rest and harmony of the soul for eternity. We have hope and assurance in his love that we testify to in life by having his presence dwell through us to the world. As you already know, there is something wrong with giving advise but not doing it. So idenitify what are the reasons and emotions envolved that make you not want to live for God or live unto your own advise. Then take them to God. Give it all to him. His message is for us to be his messengers of peace and hope not only by words but by faith that leads to actions of love fully.

depression may have biological basis, so you may want to consult a professional about it. (if you haven't already done that).

you could also try and engage in various new activities.

you said that people tell you their problems. well maybe it's time you stopped listening and start speaking out for yourself.

share your difficulties and problems and take this load off your shoulder.
life is not a black thing... our eyes see the colour of black, meaning that "we" see black.

we can train ourselves little by little in changing how we view things. we can start by "forcing" positive thoughts for example.

the human mind is a great tool... but it is not the only thing we have...
we need to know how to handle it cause if it takes the lead it may overwhelm us.

control your mind...think of good thoughts... force them to your mind in the beginning... stop listening to what your mind says (eg i did this wrong, i am bad etc).

for example, when thoughts of guilt come throw them back from where they came.
we need to feel guilty for wrong doings but it should be done in a stable psychological state. if our state is not balanced then we better dismiss the guilt for the time, and try to work on ourselves and get back to "normal" (whatever this normal may be...cause it's another big discussion).

don't force yourself with reading the Bible. read something that softens your heart for the time, and makes you feel nice.

feel free to pm me.

Good Luck!!

Here is something I posted in the past that might help:

“I keep thinking about committing suicide. What can I do?”

First of all, I am no professional – just one friend talking to another.

Hold on, friend. The Lord has plans for you, to give you hope and a future. (Jer. 29:11) All you have to do is sincerely seek Him. If you persevere, you will have those things. It’s His promise.

I am going to suggest various things that I KNOW will help. They don't need to be done all at once - just step by step, inch by inch.

If these feelings happen again, please pray for help; then call 911 and they can connect you with the suicide prevention center. They can talk you through it.

There might also be something helpful on this site: http://depression.about.com.od/suicideprevent/

Please see a Christian counselor right away if you are not yet doing so. Large churches usually have someone, for example, and provide a sliding scale if finances are a problem. They will probably think you need medication for a time - be sure to tell them that you are having suicidal thoughts, as some medicines can cause problems in that area. A church that believes the Bible is without error and is inspired by God is the best place to call - a conservative denomination, such as Southern Baptists, for example.

And large churches also often have a Christian support group, which is free. This is very important - you need to be around others who have been where you are, and who are in some stage of recovery. They can tell you what worked for them, and they base it all on the Bible. This is unbelievably helpful. It is very practical. You will see that you are just one of many - that you have reacted normally to the dysfunctional surroundings you experienced at some point.

Similarly, the Recovery forum at www.christianforums.com will be helpful for you, rooms such as General Struggles or Depression, and whatever else applies.

Once a person has relied on Jesus to pay for all their sins on the cross and to get them to Heaven without any good works or promises, many good things will happen.
Here is one of them: As you recover, you will find that eventually you will be able to minister more deeply and widely than others who have not been through so much. See Isaiah 61, first half. You will have a ready-made ministry waiting right here for you at CF, unless the Lord leads you to a different one.

But right now you need to be healed. I want to also address the issue of feeling unworthy. I felt that way until I was 42 - I felt guilty for breathing. Thank God I persevered - when I got the help I have been telling you about, things started to turn around right away.

I did not feel loved or accepted as a child. As a result, I became a people pleaser, trying desperately to be loved and accepted by others. Fortunately, it didn't work. I was saved at the age of 30, and then God began working on me, especially through Scripture, to undo the harm, and then to build me up. But I thought I had to do all the changing in my own strength, so I had a lot of failures. You can find out a lot more specifics, and I think it would help, if you read "Personal Testimony" in my website. The whole site is designed to help people like you, friend.

God, who is powerful enough to raise the dead, has the same power to keep you persevering. Ask Him to do it. And then, I hope you will do one thing I have suggested before the week is over. Pray, and pick.

God bless you, friend. I will pray for you. Please let me know if I can help.
Aloha in Jesus

Hi again, friend.

Another issue I'd like to address, since you sign yourself "need to be saved":
From another quote of mine:
QUOTE:
"What is saving faith? In salvation verses, the Greek for believe is "to trust in or rely upon". (I'll quote the following verses at the end) As in John 3:16, Acts 16:31 - to trust in Christ's death on the cross to pay for all sins (I Peter 3:18) and to get us to Heaven one day, without any good works on our own (Ephesians 2:8-9). In other words, "faith alone in Christ alone plus nothing".
And we cannot lose our salvation (see gift in Rom. 6:23 & 11:29, also John 10:28-29 - we can't even take ourselves out of God's hand). If you see verses seeming to contradict these, just ask yourself which can be taken more than one way - God never contradicts Himself.

So, if the worst sinner in the world made that decision, and then continued sinning with no qualms, he would be punished by his heavenly Father, but he would still go to Heaven when he died, because he cannot lose his salvation.

Concerning sin, God says that everyone is a sinner. "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) That's why He sent Jesus to make the payment for all sins on the cross. We do not have to conform (do good works, promise to be good, etc.) in order to receive eternal life. We only need to make a decision to rely on Jesus to save us. To accept God's free gift. (Romans 6:23) .

Once we have made the decision, to be sure we understand correctly, we can ask ourselves this question: "What am I counting on to get to Heaven?"

(If our answer included even a tiny bit of good works or promises to be good, that shows we are not relying completely on Jesus to be our sinbearer and to get us there. In that case, we need to pray and re-read the verses until we understand. Then we can make the correct decision.) END QUOTE

Here are the verses I mentioned:

Rom 3:23
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
(NIV)

Rom 6:23
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(NIV)

Eph 2:8-9
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
(NIV)

John 3:16
16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
(NIV)
1 Pet 3:18
18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. ...(NIV)

Acts 16:31
31 They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved-- you and your household."
(NIV)

And we cannot lose our salvation:
Rom 6:23
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(NIV)

Rom 11:29
29 for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable.
(NIV)

John 10:28-29
28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.
29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. (NIV) (we can't even snatch ourselves out of God's hand.)

If you see verses that seem to contradict these, just pray and see which verses can only be taken one way - because God never contradicts Himself.

I hope that you will soon make the decision to rely on Jesus as your sinbearer. When that happens, the Holy Spirit instantly comes to live in you, to eventually give you a life of victory and peace as you cooperate with Him and rely on His strength.

God bless you, friend. I'll be praying. I see some other issues in your post, but wanted to cover this first, since it is the most important decision you will ever make.

Let me know if you want to discuss some of the other issues.
Aloha in Jesus

Dear Needstobesaved...

Jesus is the Great Physician, and He has all the answers to your problems.

Our greatest problem in life, the one which all other problems stem from, is that we do not spend time with God. You believe in God, that much is obvious; Jesus said that if you believe in God, believe also in Him, for God sent Him to bring salvation to you.

Ask Christ to forgive you and to come into your life if you have not already done so. Scripture says that nothing can separate you from the love God has from you, not highth nor depth, meaning not how high your sins may reach up to heaven nor how deep your sins may reach to the bottom of the ocean. In Christ He has removed our sins as far as the east is to the west...that's in a straight line...that means that they never reach each other...that means your sins (all those things that you are feeling guilty about) have been permanently removed, forever. There is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ...all you need do now is remain in Christ by obeying His word and loving on people.

Which brings us to your other problem...depression. If the depression is not chemical (which you might need help with from a doctor) then it is usually brought about by "self" circumstances. Get out and spend yourself on helping others, get your life's focus off of self and on to helping others (which is what God means by loving your neighbor), and your depression will take wings and disappear.

Blessings!
